I'd have to say no... 4E isn't built to support the kinds of D&D games I played in the 70's, 80's & 90's. It's just too different in both rules and background.

I've played all kinds of RPGs over the years, so I'll give 4E a shot. I'll stick with it if I can find or gather a good group for it more easily than if we were playing M&M, C&C or Pathfinder.

Well, better time to answer this poll now then when it first appeared 10 months ago.

Hit points? check
XP & Levels? check
Classes/Races? check
Fantasy? check
Polyhedral dice (especially that d20)? check
Sitting around a table with friends being heroes slaying monsters?

Still sounds like D&D to me.

Yeah, I had my issues with the things I was hearing about it. Finally I decided to keep an open mind, shut my mouth about it, and just wait and see. I finally played it and guess what? I enjoyed it, and it definitely felt like D&D to me. It actually felt more dynamic than 3.x, despite the lessened degree of complexity.

Don't get me wrong, I still like 3.x. I still want to play some 3.x games. In fact, I could totally see using Pathfinder along with some adventure paths so I don't have to bother converting everything to 4E, but I want to design for 4E, and I want to prepare to run games for 4E.

That could be Palladium Fantasy or Rolemaster, though.

From everything I have read about 4e, my answer would have to be NO. The reasons for my vote are several including the fact that Vancian magic is gone, the strange new alignment system, new classes and races, and the removal of several classes and races.

All that said, I haven't actually played 4e. Maybe in play it would still feel like D&D but based on what I know about it my initial assessment stands.

I just can't see Mostin the Metagnostic converting to the new rules without heavy loss, and that's a damned shame.
Certainly true but was Mostin the norm or or an abberation as far as overpowered caster classes helping to build a great story is concerned?

To me, it's still D&D. Some things don't work anymore, but on the other hand, there have also been new options opened up.

cheers
