Is 4E the New Coke of RPGs?

I am talking about people who actually played. My point is the number of negative reactions seems to increase the more people play the new system. Granted the pro-4E crowd is very vocal and aggressive in its support of the game, but I see lots of people trying the new system, and shaking their heads. I actually kind of like the new system, but I still think it is inferior to 3E.

This could easily come from the mouth of another ENworlder, different folks, different strokes.

however I've pretty much seen a small amount people coming round to 4th edition, and the lovers still loving it and the haters still hating it, and most of the inbetween the two extremes people still being inbetween those two extremes.

The "no edition wars threads for a month" sticky was posted on June 11. This thread therefore violates the edition war ban. I'll report it, in case it hasn't been already.

Mark my words, in six months 4E (and DDI) will be hailed as a monumental failure. Not in terms of design (it is a very elegant system), but in terms of failing to meet its markets' expectations.

I have seen very little that points to people not liking 4E. My RL gaming friends are in general a lot more enthusiastic now than they were a few months ago - especially those that have tested it. As good as all of us are 30+, and most of us have more than 20 years of D&D behind us. We don't hate 3.X either. Different systems for different purposes. Simple as that.

Edition bashing is boring, isn't it?

From what I am hearing at my local gaming stores, people are generally unhappy with the new rules system.

I would be vary of attaching too much value to what you hear in the local gaming stores. I've heard some wild and inaccurate claims from people on both sides of the counter, so as a weather fane to gauge the accuracy of the success on non-succes of 4e, it's pretty worthless.

But as one data point among the many others, it's still a data point, I guess.

/M
