Is Call of Cthulu fun to play?

I will probably begin playing Call of Cthulu in a month or so. I wanted to know, from those who have played it, what they thought of it in terms of actual fun and excitement. Thanks.

It depends on what you like.

If you like high fantasy where the characters are super human you probably won't like CoC.

If you like a bit more realism where you play paper heroes in a steel world and just the site of a monster is enough to drive you made then you'll like CoC.

I have only played the original but I would say it is the most fun roleplaying game I've ever played.

You will enjoy having your character die or go insane, well you will with a good GM. That's half the fun of the game.

Played only one game... the GM was very good and we were scared, very scared. Good for people who want to create new characters every 2-3 sessions at most.

It ridiculous how fast those PCs die/go insane/suicide... :) Far cry from PCs in D&D that last for years on end...

I wouldnt play it as my main source of RPG thou... more like for variety. So to answer your question... yes its FUN... somehow...

CoC is an excellent RPG.

It pitches you against things that you can't possibly defeat for good, only postpone for a while.

If GMed well and if the players collaborate, you can really build yourselves up real scared, and that is a great feeling. I remember one of our players in a session who was so terrified that he didn't want to see any of the horrors anymore. He closed his eyes and put his hands over his ears so he wouldn't hear what the GM was describing. He stayed that war for a bout ten minutes and then he couldn't stand it anymore :

- What's going on ? he asked in a terrified voice

- Well there's these weird enormous goat traces here. Look, they are always in a triangular pattern, as if a three legged gigantic goat had been here.

- AAAAAAAaaaaaaaaahhhh !

True, character longevity is not the idea, but you spend a lot less time designing characters as welland the concepts are fairly easy to come up with.

It's great fun !

I have a very easy way to help you decide.

Please take the time to read the following short story:

http://www.gizmology.net/lovecraft/works/cthulhu.htm

Now, imagine yourself in the role of either Inspector Lagrasse in this story, or the role of the Norwegian (sp?) fisherman.

If this appeals to you, then you may like Call of Cthulhu (either version).

If your GM plans on running only a one-shot game ro two, then your role may instead be that of the insane artist! :)

CoC can be awesome. Some of the most fun I've had roleplaying and GMing has been with this setting.

If you're looking for more action in your otherwordly, insanity-causing horror RPG you might try a Delta Green game (from Pagan Publish - uses the CoC rules with a D20 verson on the way). It's a more military/intrigue feel to the Cthulhu mythos. I wish I could say the players last longer when their heavily armed - but it just isn't true. :D

Would you all who've played it say it was like Shadowrun in its paranioa level? Or even worse? From what y'all are saying, I guess I should have plenty of starter characters ready to go from the beginning. :)
