Is disarm useless?

Last seasons Buffy came way to close to porn a couple times for me to have enjoyed the season as a whole. Just because the network will LET you show something Joss doesn't mean you SHOULD show it. It's too bad because up until that point I had seen every episode and recommended it to quite a few friends for it's brilliant writing. Now? I'm a bit ashamed and hope they didn't take my advice. :( I can only hope Joss got it out of his system and goes back to writing entertaining character interaction that doesn't involve graphic sex. ;)

Re: First level

Oops, forgot to clarify that I was wondering why anyone would take Disarm at first level. :)

But the AoO for picking up a weapon is what seals the deal. Now that's useful, especially if you've got buddies standing beside you.

And, since Disarm can be used as your own AoO... it'd be pretty funny to use your longspear to disarm your foe as he charges in at you. He'd stop right in front of you, but his weapon would be 5 feet behind him.

By 2nd level take hold the line, combat reflexes, and improved disarm.
They charge, you disarm with your AoO.
Your turn. Ready an action to disarm if they attack.
If they draw another weapon (does not provoke AoO) you disarm again.
If they pick up their weapon, you attack them with your AoO. Then disarm them with your readied action if they try to attack.
This doesn't work as well against multiple opponents.
Works very well if you have another pc that can also get AoO against the opponent.

Hee hee -- this may be my best unintentional hijack ever!

(As for the monk's hands being tiny weapons, I guess you're technically right. However, this annoys me, and I've generally considered a monk's body to be a medium-sized weapon: it should be easier to disarm someone with a free hand than with a club).

The Snatch Weapon feat in S&S is pretty cool too. Disarm someone when your off hand is open, and then you steal their weapon in midair and get an immediate bonus attack with it. I'm not sure, but if you were taking a full attack action, you might then be able to use the weapon in your full attack. Then I guess you could drop the weapon and let the enemy attempt to pick it up as a free action - at which point you could disarm him again, and get another free attack.

A good question was brought up about disarming with a longspear. If some guy was charging you, and you had a longspear, made a disarm attempt at 10 feet away and succeed, would the guy be considered to finish his charge, thus being only 5 feet away, or would he stay at 10 feet?

I've a vauge recollection of rule in one of the splatbooks that says a monk using BOTH hands to disarm can count them as a medium weapon. Maybe someone with a better memory (or who plays a monk) can confirm that?

That's because your doing it wrong. When you slap your forehead you need to use something large and made of metal. That'll get the old brain working. :D

Hm... can I make an AoO with an unarmed strike (I'm no monk and don't have improved unarmed strike)?

According to the rules, no. You don't threaten an area unarmed.

EDIT: On second thought...I think I'm mistaken...let me check...

EDIT: Ah! There it is! It's in an older thread. There is nothing in the rules that says an unarmed character doesn't threaten an area. Apparently, though I haven't seen it myself, the Sage says otherwise?
