Given that Disintegrate is 6th level, that's rather irrelevant.

How to avoid disintigrates? Avoid pissing off 11th level mages .

ANd yes, all a character's equipment drops to the ground. Kind of like Duck Dodger's disintegration-proof vest in the old cartoon.

We have ruled that items are also distroyed, though magic stuff gets a save.. That way, it is possible to disintegrate walls with other things attached (like doors), and it doesnt become "Diablo" with the dead guys automatically dropping all their loot

It works pretty good that way
