D&D General Stealing Death Moves from Daggerheart for 5e

I think part of why it works in daggerheart is that there is no default "maybe luck will just give me an out" option. You get knocked down, you have to choose.

So delete death saves unless they character takes the let fate decide option.

Did you read the other two options? Neither of them involve making death saves at all.
 

I think Matt Mercer's part rolled from one side of his head to the other when you said you'd steal from Daggerheart to add to D&D.

But yeah, death moves are a good idea. I've been using them for years now.
 



You didnt specify that death saves are replaced in the OP, and one of them involves 'permanent death save failure'.
The “Put Your Life in Fate’s Hands” option involves making death saves (technically the DM makes them, but the mechanic is the same except that you don’t know the results until someone tries to heal or stabilize you). The “Avoid Your Fate” option guarantees you survive - you simply fall unconscious and are stable, no rolls required, but it incurs a permanent death save failure, so all future instances of “Putting Your Life in Fate’s Hands” are riskier, until/unless you work with the DM to decide how to heal the trauma that permanent failure represents. “Take Your Last Gasp” kills your character after doing it, so obviously no death saves involved there.

I dont know how my comment can possibly seem to be unaware of any of this, so i am just going to metaphorically smile and nod and walk away.

Oh! Something I’ve just realized is that if you don’t know the results of your death saving throws when you Put Your Life in Fate’s Hands, you can’t really benefit from Heroic Inspiration as a reroll on a failed death save. So, I might add that if you spend Heroic Inspiration immediately when you Put Your Life in Fate’s Hands, you get one automatic death saving throw success. That can also help shore up some of the extra risk that the permanent failure from Avoid Your Fate adds.
Ok, did the math so I can give players more information if they’re uncertain whether they should take the risk of Putting Their Life in Fate’s Hands.

Here’s the approximate percentage chance of survival, rounded to the nearest whole number, based on number of “scars” (permanent death save failures) accumulated and whether or not you spend Heroic Inspiration for one auto-success. Assuming you don’t have advantage on death saves, and you ride it out until you stabilize naturally or die.

But there very much is; that’s what Daggerheart’s Risk It All move does, so I’m not sure what you are saying here. “Daggerheart’s Death Move system only works because it doesn’t do [thing Daggerheart’s Death Move system literally does]”? Huh?

Which my port of the Death Moves system… also does. So, if you already understood that… I’m just confused, what were you actually trying to express here?

Anyway, if you’d like to bow out of the conversation, that’s fine. I apologize if I came off as combative or anything like that, I was simply confused and trying to clarify because it seems like one or both of us has misunderstood the other.
