Is it possible for a charmed creature to attack its charmer?

I think that a bluff check would be in order there.

The opposed charisma check is merely to convince him to do something he ordinarily wouldn't do....the text of the spell states: "An affected creature never obeys suicidal or obviously harmful orders, but it might be convinced that something very dangerous is worth doing."

So I'd make that particular check a bluff check to convince the character that the button is harmless.

So to sum up: Bluff for charmed targets to fool them into doing something suicidal; Charisma check for the moral dilemmas

IF you get charmed...

and IF you fail your save...

and IF the BBEG passes a CHA check to give you an order...

and IF you have no protection against sonic, mind affecting, charm, enchantments...

Then this is an issue.

IF you have actually hauled a fellow PC or closely allied NPC in for chaotic behavior in the past then I'd allow you to skate out of the charm by doing non-lethal damage or something. Other than that, I'd say that if the BBEG commanded you to "look the other way, just this once," it would work (assuming all the other stuff failed). After all, the spell is potent enough to have someone suicidally hold against a dragon for "just a few rounds."

If you are so vulnerable to this effect that you allow the caster to target you, fail your save, fail a check, and have no shields in place, you deserve to get screwed a bit. Simple spells like Silence 15', Protection from Evil or class abilities give substantial or complete protection against this spell.

All depends on the character.

One PC IMC would do just about anything for a buddy; he's a total chaotic good push over. Burne, on the other hand, will literally sell his best friend into slavery.

In a campaign I used to run, Torin not only sold a teammate to an evil temple as a sacrifice, he decided to sacrifice the entire party in return for power, many of which he considered dear friends. I believe the phrase was "Being consigned to Hell sounds bad but don't worry, when I'm a demon prince I'll make sure you guys are near the top of the food chain."

So...charm wouldn't have done much against Torin except let him get dangerously close to the caster.

No, he merely has never actually had a friend before. Being charmed would be in interest rp oppertunity....
