Nothing whatsoever has been retconned. They've been adamant about that. I gather that it basically blew up during the Spellplague, and was replaced by the continent with the brand-new dragonborn empire which gated in from Abeir.

So they retconned it with an explosion?

I'm not trying to be critical; I was genuinely curious to its fate.

Also, Maztica was kinda dull anyway, and it totally subverted Amn into a bad copy of 15th century Spain.

Intriguing.

It just irks me that it's a for profit campaign setting, rather than the creator's homebrew that was good enough to be professionally published. Sure, it's an irrational thing to dislike about Eberron, but it wouldn't be irrational if I was rational about it. I didn't even enter the thing. I knew my setting would never be chosen based on the guidelines for it.
Eberron's purpose is deceptively simple: a place to facilitate good D&D game play. And it succeeded in this task admirably.

I've lost count of the number of homebrew settings I've seen which are intricately detailed, lovingly crafted, and absolute crashing bores for everyone but the frustrated novelist who wrote them.

Eberron, on the other hand, is a game setting first and foremost, and never loses sight of this fact.

I'm still trying to figure out why the adamantly neutral good god of dawn, who's the second most worshiped god in all of Faerun, decided "You know what? I think I'll become the adamantly lawful neutral 'OBEY, PEASENT' god that everyone's forgotten, instead. That sounds like a good idea. Worshipers and consistency? That's for suckers."

Retcon is retroactive continuity. Which means you change something and say it was always like that.

The Spellplague is plot progression, as it takes place after 3e's Realms in the timeline.

Rather than a new setting, why not a sensible update to Grayhawk? If done properly, it could bring back some old fans.

What do we know about the 4.0 settings?

I'm aware. I was being completely flippant. I apologize. :)

Speaking of Maztica (Well, at least Belorin was) wasn't there something about it being retconned out of the new realms? Did I hallucinate that?
I believe that Maztica has been switched with a continent from Toril's other half Abeir.
Ed greenwood is said to be providing the content for said replacement.

For the love of God, no! We already have enough settings. Also, needing a new settings seems like a sign to me that some of the chages to the game might just be a tad too much.

Ppl, pls. The USS Enterprise could beat BOTH Eberron AND Forgotten Realms, with one photon torp launcher tied behind its back.
