Is Kukri a Monk Weapon?

First Post
Hey, folks! I have a quick question: is a Kukri considered a monk weapon, usable with Flurry of Blows? I know that Daggers are OK, but not sure if Kukris work.

I am working on a new PC heading towards the Black Flame Zealot PrC, and would like a dash of Monk flavor with his Rogue and Cleric. ;)

The only weapons out of the PHB that are special monk weapons are the kama, nunchaku, sai, quaterstaff, shuriken, and siangham. Out of Complete Warrior, only the lajatang is a special monk weapon. Out of Arms and Equipment Guide, the butterfly sword, the tiger claw, tonfa, three section staff, and the war fan are special monk weapons. Those are the only books I have that I know contain special monk weapons.

Whoops, I totally forgot about OA and Rokugan.

Out of OA, the jitte is the only weapon not already on that list. There is no weapon in the Rokugan book that is a special monk weapon that is not already on the list.

Eberron introduced a few feats that allow other weapons to be used as monk weapons, e.g. the longspear, the longsword and the two-bladed sword. If your DM doesn't mind, perhaps he could allow you to take a feat to use the kukri as a monk weapon.

iirc (maybe 3.0?) .. some of those weapons listed are still exotic weapons, but if a monk spends a feat to learn it they also get to use flurry of blows

The ones in the PHB are exotic (cept for the staff), but the monk is proficient with them, so he doesn't need to spend a feat to be proficient with them. The weapons from the other books are exotic and do require the EWP.

OK, thanks, guys! To Otter: I have no idea why I thought daggers were monk weapons, but I was certain they were- apparently I was "certain"-ly wrong. :)

You're not the only one who thinks that. It surprises me that seemingly everyone who brings up the issue of monk weapons thinks daggers are special monk weapons.

Any Weapon Can Be a Special Monk Weapon... Circumstantially

If you are incorporating Pathfinder rules into your game, the list of monk weapons is considerably expanded in the Ultimate Combat book. All-in-all, D&D rules are always subject to change, modification, or utter dismissal at the DM's whim for the purpose of game balance and story integrity. If the DM decides that the kukri is an acceptable monk weapon for your campaign... then so be it.
