Is my halfling an outsider?

This has many ramifications, with one big one that has occurred to me several times in recent gaming sessions - he can't be raised, resurrected or true resurrected.
Wasn't your halfling already killed and resurrected in the game? I'm thinking of the fight with the Dockside Royals in Eversink. It would be somewhat strange to go back and say that that couldn't have happened, so long after the fact.

I think of outsiders are special creatures whose essence is strongly tied to, or maybe a reflection of, their home plane, and as a result usually have some special abilities or qualities. Whereas a human born to human parents in the Seven Heavens is just a regular person.

In game terms, not being able to be raised is a pretty big penalty. So unless you got some kind of benefit from your background, it wouldn't be balanced to penalize your character like that.

I'd say that the outsider template refers more to race than anything else. Perhaps a family of halflings moved to an alternate plane of existance and took up residence. Since they are originally from the Prime, their descendants are treated as 'Primes' as well. So unless your halfling is a member of an alternate halfling sub-race which originated off of the Prime, he is not an outsider.

But, of course, he's not an outsider. He's an extraplanar humanoid. So it doens't matter either way...

Extraplanar he is, outsider he isn't.

This is my feeling as well, but I haven't been able to find anything explicit in the rules. Anyone else see anything? Even an actual definition of 'extraplanar'?

Yes, you're right, he died in that battle (and was raised). I wouldn't expect that event to be reversed - but doing things wrong once (if that were the case, which I don't think applies here) is not usually a good reason to continue to do things a particular way. Not to say that that is your point - I'm just blathering...

Extraplanar is a new subtype from Fiend Folio that will be in 3.5. Hopefully they will revise that rather restricting definition of outsider in 3.5 too, they don't in FF.

The definition from FF is... extremely long. Too long to type up. Basically: any creature not on it's home plane is extraplanar. It's a relative subtype. The result of this is that it can be dissmised or banished, suffers the full effect of blasphemy, dictum, holy word or word of chaos (depending on alignment. It can also be called or summoned by spells including gate, planar ally spells, planar binding spells and potentially the summon monster spells as well...

So your halfling is extraplanar. He's still a humanoid tho, unlesshe's templated or somethign similar that changes his type. But being on the Prime means that there are various possibilities to hurt him that otherwise wouldn't exist, in particular the DM can chose to banish or dismiss him, which would eb a great plot hook!

Hope this helps.

Right! Extraplanar humanoid he is. Thanks, everyone!

And Alomir? Wait til you see what happens when you get hit by a banishment.... :D

No! You most definitely do NOT hear wedding bells!

Agar has certain.... contingency plans, you might say, in that arena. I hope. (Thanks, Sagiro, for the idea!)

Also, thanks to all for the replies!
