• Is Pathfinder a 3.75E?

I joined this board back in the 4e days and it was horrible until the mods cracked down on the fighting, right now it seems to be like the wild west again, but I assume they will crack down again.

Honestly we won't know until it's out and we see just how "backwards compatible" the old material is. Every edition since 2nd has had a revised edition of some sort put out. The edition gap really comes down to how much work the table has to put in to use older materials.

There are a lot of folks who argued, even at the time, that Unearthed Arcana effectively split 1E into two eras (no one knew to use the word "edition" yet) as a UA character would run rings around a standard PHB one, although the DM-facing side of the game didn't much change at that point.

We mostly handled it by playing terribly broken UA characters, then deciding they weren't all that much fun after a few weeks, and went back to using the PHB and the Dragon magazine classes.

Based on what I've seen so far, it feels like D&D 5.25, so I went with "No!"

So, in 2024, if you're using the new PHB, MM, DMG and whatever other books are released to support them, are you playing a different edition of Dungeons & Dragons than those using the 2014 core books?

Why or why not?

No, because I’ll still be using Tasha’s and Xanathar’s and MoTM and the setting books, without any issues. 2024 ranger will work with existing, let’s say, Swarmkeeper.

Not after conversion, not if you change the math a bit, just sit down and play. Some classes will get some features at different levels, which is trivial.

I guess I got accustomed to "Edition Turnover" early on. I started playing D&D with the Red Box Basic Set, and that whole BECMI model became the norm for me and my friends. We started playing the Basic Rules in middle school, then we switched to the Expert Rules. By the time we were in high school, we had switched to the Companion Rules Set, and then Masters by the time we graduated. Then I started all over again in college, introducing my new roommates to the Rules Cyclopedia.

So later, going from 3E to 3.5E to Pathfinder to 5E all seemed normal.

I guess I never developed much edition loyalty. BECM is my favorite and I still play it from time to time but it's terribly outdated both in mechanics and tone. It's not the game I'm currently playing, nor is it the one I've played the most, and--oh, my aching heart--it's no longer what comes to mind when people talk about "playing D&D."

Don't forget 4-ons vs 3-tards fights that started hours before 4e was announced.

We didn't even have confirmation on the new edition and the war had begun.
