Is the Spell Addict from "Plot & Poison" too powerful?

THe more I think on it, the more I'd want to see it in play. I really like that an attempt at this type of class was designed, I really like it when what we expect and are used to in a prestige class are changed. Sure, it might in the end fail but I think the game is better for the attempt so that maybe someone can improve upon it and make it work even better in the future :D

You're right, it should be tested in action.

I know this is a lame argument, but I just wouldn't want to go down this road in PrC's.. next thing it's the fighter PrC with +2 BAB per level.

I'm sure there are lots of innovative things you could do within the existing D&D framework, without going for funky progression.. This from a man who's going to keep his next campaign PrC-free, though ;)

Let him take the class.

The class has a definite and permanant weakness.

Design a few encounters to exploit the weakness.

I've found this works sooooo much better than telling them No.

You control the down time... the cash flow... you control all the vectors involved in what you are worried about. Let them have it... both the class and the reparcutions.

How would a Half Orc get into a Drow subculture anyway?

Oh, I would agree that this is the best Drow supplement I've ever seen and an overall great book but I still wouldn't offer a lot of the options to my players. For NPCs on the other hand... muhahaha :D

Thanks all....

Thank you for all the wonderful responses and solutions. The player in question wants to take the PrC but not as a part of the drow subculture (no drow in the campaign world). The character is already 11th level (with mostly item creation feats) and i do like the idea of adding endurance to the feat requirements.

My biggest concern is not the advanced spell casting. It is the fact that the player also gains spells of the higher level. This breaks the item creation feats all together as the PC can continually try to create items of a higher level when under normal circumstances, the player would be unable to. Further I also feel that a PC with this PrC will start to dominate the game all together.

I was considering adding Endurance to the feat chain and only letting the PC have the ability to cast higher level spells and not gain the spells as well.

Thank you everyone for weighing in. It is great to have the designers opinion as well. :)
