D&D (2024) Is There A New Sheriff in Town?

Lol, most D&D players have no idea who works for WOTC, what their contributions are, what their loss would mean, what their movement to some other company says, etc…

Now folks on EN world…

That's exactly what makes it so great!

While I don't think D&D will always be the #1 RPG, I don't see anything in Daggerheart that would indicate it might unseat D&D.

Speculation time.

1. I believe it's in the same demographic space. It's style is the same, it's expressing the same values.

2. It seems (have not played it, read the SRD, read the threads here) to be much more intentional in it's design. It knows what it is, and what it wants to be. I don't believe D&D has this.

3. It's community is coherent. I don't believe D&D has this.

That said?

4. It's a drop in the bucket compared to the monolith that is D&D.

In 5 to 10 years could it supplant D&D? Sure.

My impression is that most gamers want a game rather than a collaborative world-building exercise, so Daggerheart isn't really competing in the same segment as D&D.
No, there is no "fight" between D&D and Daggerheart.
like others I don't see Daggerheart as a big threat to D&D.

On the one hand, I completely and totally agree with this logic and line of thinking. It was my knee-jerk reaction, too.

On the other hand, I imagine that this is exactly what everyone at SPI and other wargamming companies was saying about D&D in 197X. And then...

Wargaming was way before my time, but I'm curious: how big was it at its height?

For example, movement in Daggerheart looks kinda weird to me coming from D&D. If I understand correctly, the distance a character can move is only defined by the battle map and is not defined outside of battle, and in battle a character can either move up to 30 feet while taking an action or, if they only want to move, can move anywhere on the map if they make an Agility roll.
