Is there an upper limit for Vampiric Touch?

There is also the debate if the caster has the ability to sneak attack. Since VT has an attack roll it is elligible. So that may/may not provide with more HPs depending on the sneak dice and caster lvl.

Ohh.... arcane Trickster with Practiced Spellcaster Rogue 3/Wiz 7/Arcane Trickster 10 - 9th level spells, 7d6 Sneak Attack, 20th caster level for that Vampiric Touch - 17d6 damage, gained as temporary HP..... Maximized? (I'm guessing 60+7d6....) Empowered (I'm guessing 15d6+7d6)? Quickened (not lots of extra damage, but great for a second touch attack for 10d6+17d6....)? Tasty.....

Edit: With a casting of Spectral Hand, can even be done at range.... maybe.... hmm....

Well, it says "only the best applies". If the other two spells do not apply, they are not adding THP to the character's hit point total; THP that are not being added to the character's hit point total cannot be decreased by damage that is applied to that total, surely?
Well, I don't think that's the more appropriate ruling. I think "Same Effect with Differing Results" is better. It's a toss up of whether the DM just wants to use the THP value from the last casting of vampiric touch (since it says 'usually'). You end up with the same thing, but you don't have the nagging problem of quiescence. :)
