Is this a cruel DM?

Yup. Mummy Rot, and Lycanthrope on the same character who is only 5th level. We have officially raised the DM to the status of 5 skulls (the max), since the party's opinion and long term experience with the DM merits such a decree.

I actually told the DM that I really didn't think I could even take on a goblin at this point given the character's current state.

By the way, to the poster that suggested finding as many of the pages from the spellbook and then putting them back to together and mending them. I suggested that to the DM, and was told the wererats ate the paper. So, no luck there.

I wasn't really looking for sympathy from anyone. I just wanted to see if I was completely out to lunch for being a bit miffed at this turn of events with respect to the spellbook. Thanks for all of the responses. I'm thinking I should e-mail the DM the link to this thread. He doesn't frequent these boards very often.

Cheers

Yeah, cause Wererats looooooove eating paper.

Helps with digestion.

This is up there with "The vampires rampage through the town smearing excrement on the doorknobs".

Ahhhhh.....Dungeon Master. What a game.
:D

I actually have considered turning the character completely evil. It actually would be appropriate in the circumstances, I think.

If I was a vindictive person, I could end the existing campaign pretty quickly by just killing all of the other PC's. However, since we have never had a party exceed 7th level, I just don't feel like starting over again. This campaign has been going on for 3 years, but our characters have always died before getting any higher than 7th level......

Mind you, the DM doesn't like high level campaigns....sigh.

Cheers

I bet the DM would have him gnaw his holy symbol to pieces, too.

Hey, wait a second. There's no reason your Deity would forsake you. You were InFected with a Curse. When you change, your aligment shifts because you're not doing actions you choose. Would you be forsaken if you did such when Dominated? No. If your aligment shifts period, then you should be Evil, now. So, I guess it's time to start backstabbing the party, stealing their stuff, and saying 'screw the town', because everyone has forsaken you.

Dude, your DM is mean. So basicly you have a +2 BAB, the HPs of a fighter, a cleric (both first level) and 3 d4s. The party has No arcane OR divine support, seeing as that was You. And it's a low magic world

Your party is screwed, bub.

It sounds like the only thing you have a problem with is the loss of your spellbook. Benben had an excellent suggestion. Pick up the pieces, and try to put it back together. It's not like it was destroyed by a disintegrate spell.

Almost every DM I've played with has presented some sort of threat to the Wizard's spellbook. Whether it was a thief stealing it, or it getting soaked crossing the river, or whatever. I have done the same thing in my games. Wizards should guard their spellbooks with great prejudice and care. Pretty much anyone who even looks at their spellbook should garner icy looks. Anyone who touches a Wizards's spellbook without permission should lose their fingers (they make great spell components!).

Don't fret. All is not lost. I'm sure your DM doesn't plan on completely nerfing your character. He's just creating some adversity for you to overcome. Trust your DM. If your DM continually violates this trust by not allowing you to overcome you should consider joining, or forming, a new group.

Actually it is completely destroyed. Eaten by us in wererat form. Fun stuff. I'm not sure, but I think even our 5 skull DM is feeling a bit sheepish about the whole situation since we are only 5th level.

Cheers

Considering how the wererats ATE the book, I think piecing it together is going to require a ranger, a clothspin, some tweezers, and a really good microscope. ;)

Arg... I see that the spellbook was eaten while I was typing. Does your DM know that the groups feels he's violated their trust so much? If he does just leave the group.

By the way, how did you handle the spell pages being soaked in a river? I had a similar situation awhile back, but the DM really wasn't happy with the solution that we had since there really isn't anything that clarifies water damage to magic pages? Essentially a spellbook is a magic item of a sort.

In fact, I think part of the reason why he was so quick to eat my spellbook was that it gave him an easy out to remove the "offending" spellbook.

cheers

I was once in a similar game. Virtually no return from the dead, CR encounters almost always above our level, virtually no ability to get new weapons, let alone magic. I had 3 characters, and the first two became undead so weren't raisable. I hated the game.

I kept comming back, week after week, trying to beat it. Yes, I wanted to "beat the game" by living. It was like a drug. I miss that game. I miss bitching that the DM was a dick, I miss never being afraid for my characters life, I miss thinking "This time, I'll get over 7th level...". It can be fun to fight the DM, but when the game loses it's fun or you are losing old friendships, it is time to cash in your chips and move on.

The question: is the game to that point? Only you know.

This is one reason why I dislike low magic worlds.

Lots of magical creatures, curses, and it's hard as heck to get ahold of the spells/items you need to cure yourself, heal from fighting them, or use to fight them.
