Is using lich phylacteries to power devices evil?

The difference, of course, being that unlike the One Ring, lich phylacteries don't inevitably corrupt those who use them for good ends. Mustn't use improper analogies, after all.

And you have proof of this?

EDIT:

And, remember, carrying the ring around doesn't actually cause any problems (at least, not initially ... ). It's only when you're wearing it that bad stuff happens.

The analogy remains good.

Hmmmm. Interesting idea. Very interesting.

Phylacteries powering devices... Tasty!
(Of course, I'm the DM... So that would make it EVIL for sure, Eh Pendragon?)

Game ON!

Remember that Sam never wore the ring, yet he was attracted by its abilities.

Geyar, he did in fact wear the ring.

I remember once some of my players thought it would be fun to bury a lich philactery in a graveyard and kill the lich nighty. I gave them The Look and they quickly backed out of that plan. One of them was a paladin, too. Good thing he decided it was a bad idea.

All in all, I say it might not be an outright Evil act to use the item for their own benefit, but it would be corrupting. I think doing such a thing would come back to bite them later. Plus when word got around about what they were doing...

Not inherently evil, but a REALLY bad idea - eventually, the machine will break down, and stop draining the lich. If the Lich hasn't been "used up" by then, it will be after revenge.... or just wanton violence.

Makes for a good plot idea, though - the Ancient Flying City drops down a mile from where it was, and a "new" lich is terrorizing the area (it's phalactory is still trapped, so it won't go far, but it's not being suppressed anymore). For lower-level characters, you could rule that the lich is getting "partial drain", and give it negative levels that actually work on undead; for higher level characters, it could be a full-power lich of any level. Hmm....
