Is Whirlwind Attack worth it?

D00d, are you nuts? Spring Attack is possibly the bestest feat evar in the book for a melee type. Late in the game, you'll be facing things that can shred you with a single full attack. You do not want to end your round next to one of these things if you can help it, and Spring Attack is the feat that lets you do this.

A truer word has rarely been spoken. At mid levels I'd say that Spring Attack is necessary for any fighter who isn't wearing magic full plate and a magic shield., and even in those circumstances it is still a good idea. Spring attack was the next feat gained by the main fighter in my campaign after bad experiences trying to swap full attacks with a juvenile green dragon, an ettin and a cloud giant (not all at the same time, obviously!)

If you've got Spring Attack and Expertise then WA is a nice-to-have if you've got the feats. Another fighter in my campaign gets a lot of use out of it, normally on the second or subsequent round after combatants have closed. She has a great touch AC (monk/fighter/duellist with great Int/Wis/Dex) and doesn't feat standing in the midst of foes, and although she has three attacks from BAB she will often use whirlwind if there are even two foes, just for the full base attack on each.

If your party has a tendancy to Fight small (one to three) groups, then Whirlwind isn't going to be useful that often.

If your party has a tendancy of Horde fighting, then Whirlwind starts to be really nice.

That said, if you're going underwater, try for a PAO to Kraken if you have Whirlwind Attack, it's fun .

Shapechange to Hydra is more fun. Hmm, Hydra with Whirlwind?

Mind you, the time I had 6 exploding skeletons surrounding me was rather untidy...... lots of shrapnel.

WWA is also a bad idea when you are surrounded by barbed devils.
