Is your love for 3E waning? Waxing? Staying steady?

Initially, I wasn't too pleased with 3E. I had a lot of 2E rules books and knew the system back to font and front to back. I still bought all the 3E stuff when it came out, but I was slow to absorb it.

That lasted about six months, then, as the song goes "I've seen the difference, and its getting better all the time".

I've since found 3E to be great (as compared to 2E, the only other RPG system I really used). Multiclassing is so much easier, monsters can be given class levels easier, and even played as characters with little problem. There are explanations for things like arcane spellcasters wielding spells. Its easy to run a modern-day campaign, and best of all, so many companies are making new products that we have a wide variety to choose from. I doubt I'll ever get tired of 3E.

Waxing. I love this game. Now that the "learning the rules" part is behind me, I find that the roleplaying has come to the forefront again, with less emphasis being placed on making crunchy munchkin characters than on interesting and entertaining ones. 3E will be on my shelf for many years to come.

For the rule set my interest is certainly waxing.

My interest in the D&D setting has never left, I love fantasy - be it a high magic ultra-fantasy setting or something more subtle.

My biggest problem is with 3E players. I think the 3E rules are elegant, clean, and just really good in general. IMHO they provide some of the absolute best options for character customization on both a heroic (feats) and mundane (skills) level without becoming too complex. I love all the choices and possibilities they open up...

...when they're used right. The simplicity of the system also makes it very easy to totally screw up game balance. You can use the multi-classing rules, feats, and skills to bring a really cool character concept to life in game terms or you can abuse the rules to min/max a killing machine. It bugs me when players spend hours going through the rulebooks to create an uber character plan that, ultimately, just ends up making the actual game shorter and less fun.

I think blaming the system for this is wrong, though. Munchkins have always been around and, IMO, D&D has always been the primary outlet for munchkins. The new rules just happen to make it easy for players to take advantage of an inexperienced DM and create a totally unbalanced character. The only fault the D20 system has in this is that it requires a more skillful DM to keep things balanced and (maybe) more carefully choosing players for a new game.

You must hate the Sultans of Smack with a vengeance then huh? Since they're out there giving example after example of how to break the game with super-powered characters. ;)

It waned at some point, when my own campaign was losing steam and I wasn't too intrested. One of my players came to rescue, and started to DM. At first it was just nice to get to play for for a change, but now it's actually excellent. I was surprised how good the first time DM actually is; we started at level 1, and are now advanced to 9th level, playing Banewarrens which isn't actually a newbie adventure from what I've gathered.

Last session was one of the best we've had. Banewarrens has just the right mix of city adventuring and dungeoneering (which I'm not too keen on in the first place). As a player I get to do all those things I always hoped my players would do: buy a grand town house and maintain a lavish lifestyle; not the same-ole "i get a room in the tavern, then I ask the bartender for any ´'jobs'". Thats sooo lame IMO.

Are you still as passionate about 3E as you were when you first heard that it would be released? More? Less?

Well, considering I was only marginally excited about it back then, I would say more. I was one of those folks who was going to "take the good bits and combine it with my house rules and keep running 2e."

I wasn't sold on 3e until I got the MM (when I really realized how much better it really is) and actually tried running a game (after which I was hooked.)

That said, I could use a break. But it is still my main game.
