It's good class, but nobody plays it!

Hmmm.....i think since we started this group, we have seen all the major classes......cept barbarian. and bard was only in EQ d20. I know weve had cleric, druid, fighter, rogue, ranger, wizard, sorceror, monk, paladin....i think thats all of em.....

Ive noticed everyone wants to play a rogue or a fighter......

I think certain classes are only played by 'specialty' players. Playres who prefer that class for some reason. I know that htis is true for Bards and Druids especially, because their flavour is so specific.

I have yet to see someone not multiclass into fighter after the first level Barbarian. In fact, I lifted the flavour restriction off of Monk and Paladin multiclassing, and have now instated a Barbarian Multiclassing rule:
You can only choose Barbarian at 1st level (It's a cultural thing) and once you leave it you can't go back. I don't allow the extra rage feat.

I've never seen a druid either. Seen every other one, bard only once, monk once (i played it.. i was actually a player for the first time in years!.. course only lasted one module :() actually the bard and the monk were one module only... hrm..

only one pally, one ranger, one sorc, one barb..

pretty much straighforward four i see the most of (wiz, cleric, rogue, fighter)

I think the most common classes I have seen played in my campaigns are the constant favorite of fighters and rogues. I always seem to have at least one in every campaign.

Rangers, Monks, Wizards, the Psionic classes, and Clerics are more second-tier characters. Usually there is at least one or two of these but rarely a nit more infrequent.

The remaining classes are a bit rarer.

I've yet to see anybody play a bard or a psion. One player played a druid for a few sessions in a side campaign. Nobody's played a single classed sorceror, fighter or rogue.

In our ongoing campaign we've had:

Barbarian/Fighter
Ranger (deceased)
Cleric/Contemplative
Illusionist (deceased)
Rogue/Ranger (very deceased)
Transmuter/Loremaster
Paladin/Mithril Knight
Rogue/Sorceror/Arcane Archer (deceased)
Rogue/Sorceror/Fighter (lost Sor to raise dead)
Monk
Paladin with Cleric cohort
Barbarian/Ranger

Yeah, there have been plenty of rogues in my campaigns. One player worked his up to tenth level and was debating on whether to continue for the cool extra abilities, or class into assassin.

In my games, there have been no Barbarians and no Paladins. I'd love to play a Paladin myself, but I usually fill the Cleric/Druid slot when I have that rare opportunity to play.

i forgot to add rogue to my list. has anyone ever had a single-classed rogue in campaign?

Nope. But I think that speaks volumes of the class's versatility. For a heroic swashbuckler, a multiclassed Fighter/Rogue is the way to go. One of my characters was an archaeologist who had awakened powers inside of her. Multiclassed Rogue/Sorceror was the perfect fit.

In 8 years of gaming together, our group has only seen one person play a druid. I think that's due to our lack of understanding the class. Most of the group tends to think of them as shapeshifting clerics who can't use a whole lot of weapons.

That's not a completely inaccurate description. The druid suffers from the lack of a well-defined role in the party. It's not skills, hit dice, base-attack-progression, saving throws, or class features that give a class mass appeal. It's how they come together to give that class a role in the party. Now, clearly some classes are designed to be supporting characters, but even most of them still have a niche area where they excel (ranger--> tracking, monk--> speed).

Clerics have such a good package in 3e that they go a long way towards making other spellcasters look a little inadequate. In my group, the classes that nobody plays is wizard & sorcerer. Clerics have discovered the power of having the Magic domain, and then getting their hands on spell-activation items.

Twinkle, twinkle, little priest.
With that wand, you're a beast.
