I voted that it is a dedicated hobby because for me it is. I am a hypnotherapist who uses much of his free time writing marketing materials for my company and creating new CDs for customers/clients.
I NEED a creative outlet that doesn't require me to make money (though I am creating a setting to sell, if I break even I will be happy so long as my contribution is embraced by others) at it and D&D is something I do for the love of the game. I love this game. I am surprised how many folks said that computer games have better graphics than pen and paper because I have yet to see anything on a computer screen that is 1/100th as powerful, inspiring, compelling or fearsome as what I see in my mind's eye when I am preparing/running a session of D&D with my players. I am probably a frustrated fantasy author and though I am able to write well enough I am no author. With D&D I am able to tell stories with great heroes and horrid villians in a world that I created. No game engages the imagination the way RPing games do. No game puts you into situations of moral/metaphysical questioning the way RPing games do. No game allows you the near total freedom within a given milleu as RPing games do.
