Torm, I just spoke with a recruiter in Charlotte, NC who mentioned that they "were even looking for tech support folks". Which is not typical. Apparently, a lot of the financial mergers have created a huge demand for people in that area.

I'll ask her for more specifics. Where do you live? Why don't you go ahead and forward me your resume again, in case I need it.

That may be part of your problem... no programming knowledge..... Maybe you should try for a tech support job.... Some may be up your experience alley. Especially if you're dealing with customer computer systems.

That's what my friend Bill does for a living. And he never had any college education in that department.... Sure he took IT at UNCG but that was back in the mid-80s and sorely out of date. Moreso than my electronics degree from a community college.....

And they pay decent money too..... Just gotta put up with alot of BS and idiot customers. :\

As a counter story, I was unemployed for most of 2004. I got very few calls. One temp agency called me twice, while I called them 3 times a week. The ENTIRE year. The first was half a day of stuffing envelopes, not really a bad job but certainly not what I want to do. The second was to save their own butt. I didn't sign up for any "light industrial duty" but they screwed up and didn't send anybody to the site until 10 AM, 2 hours late.

But I got a full time job now, though not something I want to do forever. And it was by word of mouth.

I'll be honest. I don't know. And I can't ask him until he gets back from Roundcon this weekend...

I've been looking around for jobs in my field (psychology), not actively seeking a job, but testing the waters so I know what to expect. The only obstacles are those damnable "3+ years work experience required" even for entry-level stuff. Now, my question to you folks with experience in this sort of thing is what the heck are they asking here? Do they want the experience in that specific career field, or just work experience I.E. had a job for 3 years?

I'm so confused.

It's like the quote from "Secret of My Success": "How am I supposed to get a job with experience if I can't get a job to get the experience?" (or to that effect)

I had a lot of that recruiter run-around about a year or so ago, when I had become really burned out on my job. Turns out, I'm really highly paid for what I do, among other things, so that didn't help me much in finding opportunities. Luckily a rotation at work that was right up my alley opened up before I had to get too frenetic in looking for another job.

I sure do hope I'm not stuck here in southeast Michigan the rest of my career, though. And my wife hopes that even more. Although we're getting into the time of year where Michigan is great to live in...
