It's official:

I'm still very fond of the Fighter/Rogue then maybe Duelist. Now, maybe the trap finding doesn't always fit in, but I really think Sneak Attack works perfectly for the Swashbuckler type. Catch the enemy off guard and then a quick thrust to a vital point.

But they have grace which gives a competence bonus to reflex saves.

The Duelist and Bladesinger are PrCs are good compliments to the swashbucker especially those with high int scores.

I have players doing this sort of thing in Ravenloft, but they are using the Prestege class from the Extended Psionics Handbook : Soulknife with one of my minor tweaks to it :)

There's an option presented in Unearthed Arcana whereby a fighter can sacrifice his bonus feats in exchange for a rogue's sneak attack. Alternatively, a rogue can sacrifice sneak attack in exchange for a fighter's bonus feats. It seems to me that either of those options--possibly even more so the second than the first--would make for a really effective and falvorful swashbuckler-type character. Has anyone made use of either of them? How do they play out?

Didn't use it. Ftr/Rog builds are pretty common though and very effective since you get a good mixture of hitpoints, proficiencies, feats, skillpoints... The UA variants lack at least in one of these regards.

I always wonder why a class like the Ranger has a good Ref save and the Swashbuckler doesn´t. Grace is not enough to remedy it, IMHO.

In our campaign, the DM lets fighters choose whether to have a good fortitude save or a good reflex save, whichever fits their fighting style better.

i wish I could talk him into letting paladins choose fortitude or will :)

Given the paladins immunity to fear and the lethality of most Fort save spells, I'd rather keep the good Fort save as paladin.

I find the Unfettered class from Monte Cook's Arcana Unearthed to be a much better swashbuckler than the Swashbuckler, so that's what I use.

I second the motion. It's an excellent blend of fighter-rogue and in my opinion, shows Monte's Rolemaster days again as that system has the rogue class, which is a fighter-thief.
