Its time to exempt (sub)race from the PHB +1 rule!

Should AL Exempt Races from PHB +1 rule of AL?

  • Don't Exempt Races from PHB +1 rule of AL

    Votes: 55 70.5%

why?

New books should be for new content, not reprinting and charging me 100% price for 80% new content.

Only reprint that should happen is Rebalance(patch) of the old print. Not completely the same.

Not everyone is going to have the previous books. It also makes the DMs life much easier and :):):):):) down unforeseen combos.

For example, AL specifies the variant tieflings in SCAG actually count as part of the PH. So, like, lobby for the aasimar to be treated the same.

This is justified because the tiefling actually is in the PH, and the rule for AL is that you use the most current set of rules for any given mechanic -- this is equivalent to saying that characters with PH+SCAG use the Xanathar Swashbuckler rules even though Xanathar isn't the character's +1, since those are the most current rules for the class. The aasimar isn't in the PH, so the same treatment doesn't make sense.

The subject line should have an AL tag, though, so as not to antagonize those folks who aren't playing Adventurers League.

I......

In a discussion with a friend about this topic recently, it was pointed out that AL DMs have access to all of the books because of the store credit they receive running the game. So, if a player wanted to use a book they don't have, then borrow the DMs copy to create the character.

2. A counter point to this is that not all stores give the AL DMs store credit for running games.

what are you talking about.... never mind saw sentence 2. But it does give me a new DDAL topic. Thanks.

Too bad some of you don't get that these rules aren't written for your benefit.

Just like aarakocra being disallowed isn't about you.

These rules for AL are written for new player and new DM's. Not for the folks that have been playing for years. Perhaps the biggest driver of the success of 5E (and the continues sales of new PHBs) is accessibility to new people. And a big part of that is keep organized play accessible to those same potential new customers.

PHB+1 is simple, it's understandable, it accessible to new players and new DM's. Exceptions are not. Complexity is not.

One of my early DMs told me that if I wanted to play anything he didn't have books for, I had to buy the books myself. Took me a while, but I eventually did, and he let me play the stuff in those books.

It's actually why I'm such a big proponent of players buying books. It's why I got into other RPGs. I don't expect everyone to buy every book, but if there's something in a book you want to play, buy the book and let the DM read over it.

I have used that rule before. Problem is something they go an buy the books and/or expect to use it and I do not have a copy for reference.

You could ask to borrow theirs? I mean "Buy it" also means "bring it every day so I can check into it".

It's one reason I tend to prefer Pathfinder over 3.5 (or any other edition), their SRD is dramatically more comprehensive. I mostly buy the art for the pretty pictures and ya know, supporting the product I enjoy. Being able to easily reference a simple text document covering 90% of the material in the game without a sub or hassle is a HUGE selling point for any RPG I'd play/run.

In the good old days I generally said to the player to bring the book along, tell me what you want and I will read over it and get back to you the following week.

Aside from simple ease and time saving, I don't see any reason why that shouldn't be the norm. Few games are Kitchen Sink games and IMO, I think people exaggerate the level to which Core4 PHB-only games are actually played.
