iTunes for Windows...NOW AVAILABLE!!

Although the web page did ask to install an iTunes-related program, which I declined.

Did you note the name of the program the link prompted you to download? Was it QuickTime, perchance?

Apple has really made iTunes THE choice for downloading music. They even have gift certificates. Instead of buying a $20 gift card at an offline music store, I can send a link to a $20 iTunes credit, where the recipient can then pick and choose exactly what singles, CDs, or audio books they want. I can even set up an iTunes allowance for my kids, if I want.

Nope. iTunes Detector. Just a simple things to see if someone has iTunes on their system, I imagine. But some people are very sensitive about those things. However, it isn't necessary to install it.

Agreed! I like the gift certificate and allowance feature. Those were two features people asked for when the ITMS first came out. Nice they listened to people! :)

Agreed. I'll probably take that bit of code out of the header, then. Next to my iTunes selection (which will still open, if you have iTunes) I'll put a "download iTunes" icon.

(edit: Done. It's much less intrusive, now.)

I created the name Aeolius back in 1985, for AppleLink:PE (which later became AOL). I use the same name everywhere I go (though someone at Yahoo Groups beat me to it). So, if you see Aeolius here, on the WotC boards, at MacCentral, or on iChat, it's me. :)

OK, I always thought there was more than one batch of double vision going on!

Downloaded iTunes, must say I'm quite impressed...

but...

For now I can't really use it. It doesn't recognize either my CD drive or my CD burner, so I cant play CDs, rip CDs, or burn CDs.

I also must say I'm rather underawed by the selection of music they have, but occasionaly puzzled.

For example, they have a decent selection of celtic music, but little japanese music. They have Manowar, but not Blind Guardian, Rhapsody, Falconer, or any number of other groups similar to Manowar. Likewise I was unable to find some old clasics that I would have thought they would have... "Safety Dance" for example.

New selections are added to the iTMS every Tuesday. Yes, as a fan of 80s New Wave, I too am upset that Missing Persons, Men Without Hats, etc, have yet to be added. There is a Request&Feedback button on the iTMS home page... use it ;)

Already did, and for a few other people too.

Still can't get my drives to work :(

Yeah, the drives becomes a tricky thing. I thought they'd have trouble with it.

I would recommend going to apple.com and go to the support forums (click the support tab, then the discussions bar). You might find help there. I'm not sure what it will take for that. It recognized my HP drive right away. At least for reading and ripping cds. Hopefully there are drivers or updates or something for other drives. But the support forums may be a help.

As for the selection: I agree. There are a number of bands I like (Queensryche, Black Sabbath, Rush, Scorps, etc.) that have some albums on, but not all. Part of it is the record companies not wanting their entire catalog available. At least not yet. But the 'request' feature helps, and they do add every day. Part of the store has a long list available each week of everything added.

They are in the process of adding a bunch before the end of the month, too, when they'll hit 400,000 songs.

I'm glad you like iTunes, though. For the most part. I hope the cd drive issue gets cleared up for you. Sorry I can't be more help.

Well, the music store is still relatively new, and they need a license agreement for each song they sell online. I imagine the songs you're looking for haven't been approved by their labels yet, or won't ever be for whatever reasons.

Reading this thread I was very excited, I've been waiting for iTunes for months, since the Windows version was announced. Well, I'm still waiting. Turns out the Windows version only runs on Winows 2000 and XP. It won't even install on other versions. ...Sigh... Color me disappointed.
