iTunes for Windows...NOW AVAILABLE!!

One thing I'm not seeing with the music store is a sense of community -- people like to talk about music, it seems natural that there should be some way to tie in all the cross-hyperlinking with some forums or chatrooms or something. Maybe something even like how Amazon has user-created lists of best books for a given genre or topic, or reader reviews, stuff like that. It will be interesting to see how the service grows and develops.
It will come. I know it's already been mentioned, and I think a lot of people gave it as feedback. Speaking of which, you should request that feature. The more people that do, the more likely it will happen sooner. Many of the current features (gift certificates, allowances, etc.) were often submitted as requests when the music store first came out. So it does work.

Buy I think something like that will certainly happen. I would especially like to see user reviews like on Amazon.

I'm Canadian, anyway, so point is moot.

One reader forwarded a reply from the Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency (CMRRA) to an inquiry about bringing the iTunes Music Store to Canada.

According to the reply from David Basskin, CMRRA's President, licensing issues have indeed kept Apple from launching iTunes Canada, but the wheels are now in motion:

"I'm happy to say that the process of negotiating a licensing deal with Apple is now under way. I met last week with representatives of the company, and I'm confident that our discussions will move ahead quickly. Last week, Steve Jobs told me that Apple couldn't wait to come to Canada, and that it was a very high priority for him. I trust that this enthusiasm will be reflected in a quick and mutually successful negotiation"

Hehe, or, "I hope this means we get a ton of cash outta this."

Does iTunes really need Windows XP or 2000? I'm on Windows ME (yeah, yeah, but I don't want to buy a new OS, nor can I afford a new computer, no matter how badly I need to replace this oft-frozen hunk of plastic and silicon), just got DSL, and want to download some stuff!

It says it does, but this is often just a CYA statement, so i hit the download button anyway. After going through all the pre-install gyrations, the installer finally noticed that I didn't have XP or 2K and refused to install iTunes. So, I guess the question of whether it really needs those systems or not is moot, it refuses to install on older systems.

Moot point. Hours after making that post, Windows imploded on my computer. My computer is now defunct. With luck, I might be able to save the information on the hard drive. But it's no longer a Windows computer. (Gawd, I hate Windows ME...)
With even more luck, I might be able to make it back online before the weekend (rather than borrowing someone else's dinosaur of a computer). I went out and purchased a cheapo computer from Office Depot. Yeah, yeah, I know, but it only has to last me a couple years, until I can actually afford a decent one.
And if I can manage to salvage parts from my old computer, it might even be decent...

What music file type is provided by iTunes? MP3? CD-Audio? Or is it something proprietary, operating only on iPods and the iTune "jukebox"?

Importing options:

AAC (no fairplay) - an open standard from dolby. MPEG-4 or .m4a on harddisk

AIFF - uncompressed cd format

MP3 - everyone knows this one

WAV - got me... was in the preferences

Burning Options:

Audio (AIFF I guess, forgot to look after I burned my brothers cd)

MP3

DATA (got me)

Other:

iTunes Music Store - AAC w/Fairplay, .m4b. AAC still open standard. Fairplay is Apples proprietary Digital Rights Management which allows iTMS songs on -

upto 3 computers, any number of iPods (last I knew) and any playlist (iTMS included) to cd (cd formats under burning above) up to ten times.

So any player/computer maker can use (or should be able to use) the AAC format.

Not every audio player can play the songs from the iTMS. The iTMS songs have Fairplay, which is proprietary, which would require haggling of some sort with apple.

(please... do not stake your life on any of the above :)

edit for some confusion casused... lets how much more ensues! :D

So you cannot burn a purchased iTunes song to an audio CD?

Joy. In otherwords, it's essentialy useless to me as a portable format.

You CAN burn music CDs with iTunes (I have a CD player in my shower with my current picks on CD).
