Throw in an oil well (cf Giant) and an energy company, and you've got a deal.

Lombard---

From the Biblical POV, you might check into a bit of Job. He suffered trials and tribulations in spades. Or perhaps Sep should check into Job for inspiration on how to mess with you more ;->

From the non-Biblical POV, in addition to Joan of Arc check out the following:

  • the book The Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco: an excellent murder mystery set in medieval-schismatic, heretic-burning, Inquisition-happy Europe; the film won't help you here, FYI, since the heresy subplots were dropped from the script
  • The Primal Order published by WotC during the pre-Magic days; it's a handbook for building frpg religions: use it as a toolkit for ideas where to take Oronthonian (sp?) faith from here, and for general insight into how gods tick
  • Moorcock's The Warhound and the World's Pain for general inspiration while dealing with mostly-omnipotent powers, though I'm not sure it'll apply directly to your dilemma

hehe so your the now infamous Paladin lover to be of Despina the reedemed (or not) Succubus... I dont dare imagine what would come of this breeding !

Well unlike most "chosen" by God you still have a doubt... but you could be fed "messages" by other religions... take care....

Well, as a fan of the story hour, I thought I'd hop over here and jot down a few comments:

1. Others have suggested some very good ideas. Trial by combat (presumably Oronthon would make sure the right guy won--he is a god and he really exists and has power after all). Trial by ordeal (the coin in the water, etc) might also work.

2. Joan of Arc is a great example. There are a few others that you might not have thought of though:
-John Huss (or perhaps his followers). As far as I know, John Huss was not a military leader but his followers emerged victorious from numerous crusades against them.
-John Knox. Although John Knox didn't directly direct the armies of the Scottish Lords, he was a religious reformer involved in a war as a result of a church schism. (His _History of the Reformation in Scotland_ could be a good resource for you in this).
-I'm not certain that Jesus isn't a good source for this. He regularly faced people who refused to believe that he was God on earth (or even the voice of God on earth). Even though he never led an army against his enemies, his dealings with the Pharisees and Saducees is probably a very good example for Eadric. He not only demonstrated divine power but he also argued the theological case for doing as he did. The story of his healing the man with a withered hand on the Sabbath is a classic example of such a case.

3. As far as ecclesiastical debate goes, realize that this is not only carried out on the intellectual level but also in popular culture--in theatre and song. For examples of this, look up the life of John Bale (a key playwright, actor, and preacher in pre-reformation England). An example of purely written word could be found in the Elizabethan Marprelate controversy (named after a series of papers purporting to be written by Martin Marprelate and assaulting the character of the English bishops). Eadric's friend Ortwin could almost certainly help with that.

I think the example of Elijah vs the prophets of Baal[*] is a good one for this sort of "divine conflict" scenario. A lot of the clerical spells at high level have a very Old Testament feel to them -- storm of vengeance, holy smite, flamestrike, etc. There's just something about calling down the wrath 'o Gawd on your enemies that captures the imagination.

[*] which is IMAO still a great name for a blues band, even on the second reading

Tough.

Actually I don't remember anything helpful historical at the moment...

But you can always ask your opponents to smite you. Should at least give them something to think about.

Avoid war at all costs. It's nothing you would win. Or victory will come at a cost.

Try to divide worldly and spiritual power. Many guys will oppose you cause if you're right would mean they lose their power.

Refuse to kill any convinced Oronthon follower. No matter what he would like to do to you.

Well. These things are very basic and I am sure you got them already... but heck. It's a bump nonetheless!

in my dm's universe, truth is not absolute. a can be anthethtical to b, and they can both be relatively true.

So, you are playing a moral absolutist in a universe of relativism? I think you've created your own problems....

There is only two solutions:
A. Change the universe to fit your views.
B. Change yourself to be in harmony with the universe.

If you don't do one or the other, your life will be in constant conflit and you will continue to be a cause of warfare and suffering until you die.

my god is talking ONLY to me. i know this. other people are making the same claims - they are obviously liars.

Are you sure about this? Clearly you believe your god is talking to you, but are you SURE he isn't talking to anyone else?

unfortunately, not everyone believes me, and many believe the other guy. paladins, clerics, holy warriors etc. if i don't handle this carefully, lots of paladins, acting in all sincerity, are going to die on both sides. i need to find a way to stop this happening.

You must kill everyone who disagrees with you. Since you worry about body counts, I would suggest assassins. Kill only the leaders who oppose you, and take their positions. That way, the many innocent masses are not killed on the battlefield. Only the deviant "liars" who poison the masses with their heresy would die. So use assassins, or if you wish, duel them to death with "honor."

Either way, they must be killed. Otherwise, doubters, and cynics will chip away at what is good and right, until everything you have worked for is in decay.

You must kill them all. And rewrite the history books.

Only those who witness overwhelming proof of your righteousness bear any chance of being converted. A few may be convinced, but even then you must be warry of false faith and backslidders.

Your best solution is to kill them... Kill them all.
