[James Bond] The next movie directed by Denis Villeneuve

I love the idea of rebooting the franchise as a period film (which makes even more sense given how the last Bond ended). The Bond aesthetic works best in that context, IMO.
I've always loved that idea, but I really don't think it will happen.

I don’t have a problem with Villeneuve but I’m likewise not beside myself with joy over it. He’s a good director, but so was Sam Mendes who gave us one exceptional Bond movie (Skyfall) and one terrible one (Spectre).
While I agree about the quality of the movies, Mendes was the director and not involved in the script writing of Skyfall or Spectre. Yes, sometimes the director can affect some enlightened changes during filming, but they cannot rewrite an inferior script.

Ehhh, don’t know about that. Within reason, directors have a lot of ability to force script changes if they are big enough directors. If it’s an outright bad script, they typically don’t sign on to begin with. Also, my issues with Spectre come down to pacing, which is not just the script.

What I'm saying is that the studio system is very compartmental with unions, guilds and all. It's like a sausage machine. If the director is not also an Executive producer and has the Final Cut, the movie is often out of their hands once the filming is done. Producers and the Chief of editing take over.

We know that Barbara Broccoli is a very hands on producer. Also, directors often sign contracts before the scripts is finished (or even written sometimes). The failures of Spectre cannot solely attributed to Mendes.

I liked Spectre. 🤷
Many people agree with you. "Worldwide, this made it the second-highest-grossing James Bond film after Skyfall"

I enjoyed most of it, but found the Madeline kidnapping and rescues sequence long and predictable. It made sense within the context of the movie. I've rewatched it a few times and always get fatigued at that juncture.

Wiki: Its critical consensus reads, "Spectre nudges Daniel Craig's rebooted Bond closer to the glorious, action-driven spectacle of earlier entries, although it's admittedly reliant on established 007 formula."
