[James Bond] The next movie directed by Denis Villeneuve

and there goes one of the elements that makes it a Bond movie. I said in the previous discussion when Amazon picked up the rights and everyone was suggesting basically not a Bond movie, "folks want Bond but not Bond"
I feel that the core concept of Bond transcends misogyny. But if it can't, maybe its time is done. It's 2025 - we've moved past the Hefner era of gender politics.

It has been really interesting to see how different the responses are! I thought my opinion was more widely held. I'd be curious to hear what people find more compelling about the Bond ones.
It's competitors are all just generic spy movies with a brand name. Bond is that, but it has character--iconic elements built up over decades that those other things just can't compete with. Aston Martins, Rolexes and Omegas, Q-branch, the gadgets, M, Moneypenny, vodka martinis, Anthony Sinclair, Brioni, and Tom Ford suits, "Bond, James Bond", even the Bond girls (though that's certainly got its problems), it's just rich. Superficially so, yes, I'll be the first to admit, but these things give it a certain character which differentiates it from the rest of the pack. It's just got style. And it's British, which also makes it stand out from the endless morass of bland CIA slop.

Sure, you might not enjoy that style, and its competitors certainly have their strengths (and sometimes Bond borrows from them--but, hey, like they don't borrow from Bond?) but I guess there's a reason Bond is the 4th biggest movie franchise on the planet (after Marvel, Star Wars, and Potter), and Bourne or Mission Impossible are not.

Never confuse "it doesn't appeal to me personally" with "it's not popular". Bond is very, very popular.

This! Exactly! And as Morrus said. If you start removing the parts you don't like, it stops being what it was. To me Bond was awesome gadgets, cheesy one liners and innuendo, and beautiful sexy women.

The man saves the world from evil geniuses on the regular, let him enjoy the time he gets off. More importantly let us live vicariously through him. 😛

Cool, yeah, that makes sense. I guess the cars and the watches and the suits don't really appeal to me, so I suppose that's part of it. Also the sexism angle, I think, bothers me more than most... enough to crowd out any positives, so for me the franchise comes across primarily for its poor approach to gender. Then again, I find The Empire Strikes Back a hard watch for its approach to romance, so I don't think my tastes are representative there.

Well, give what others have stated and your own admittance that you're not a bond fan...maybe just skip the Bond movie and watch some other spy movie
