James Marsters to join the cast of Smallville

Marsters is from Santa Barbara, CA, if I recall correctly. The accent was an affectation for the character. If he isn't playing a brit, then there should be no difficulties.

Yeah, to hear him talk without the accent is actually quite jarring...

I know I was totally shocked to hear him in an interveiw on the Buffy dvds. Same with Alexis Denisoff I never knew he wasn't british. Plus does anyone else just want to see Spike show up and beat the :):):):) out of Superman?

YES! I gave up watching SV two years ago, and I still hate it.

Spike had an apalling British accent. In the early episodes it was truly cringeworthy but he either got a lot better or I got used to it and stopped cringing.
Denisoff did a much better job. I actually couldn't tell with him that he was not actually British.

Good voicework is rarely appreciated - nobody notices it when it's good. :)

I think it´s sometimes truly amazing what actors can manage in this area, though you only really notice it if you actually watch them in different roles AND hear it in the original language. (What, without the Internet, would be difficult for a German viewer like me :( )

Oh, please! As a Briton, and one with a particularly keen ear for accents, I can say that Marster's accent in all the episodes I've seen (& heard!) is perfect or very nearly so. Denisoff's, on the other hand, is simply awful. There's almost nothing he says that doesn't sound like a North American trying to do an English accent.
