Jason X (God help us all)

I feel so sad for this person.

No one should be remembered for Captain N.

I hope this person has a lucrative job now doing something inspiring.

Nope - that was kinda the highlight of his career. Voice of Link in the various Nintendo television shows... and a string of bad Tv and B movies since then...

You know, I've never seen any of the Jason movies. Or any Nightmare on Elm Street movies.

I've seen a Sesame Street movie, though. Does that horror count?

Maybe got their start from was the wrong phrase. But as everyone should know, Jason Goes To Hell (9) was in the mid 90s. Buck Rogers from the 25th century and Silver Spoons was in the mid to late 80s. Therefor Erin Gray COULDNT have gotten her start from that movie.

I guess what i meant was, a lot of semi-big named actors/actresses were in the friday the 13th films ...

Oh Dear God....

I'm holding out hope that many who have posted replies to this thread have a serious penchant for sarcasm, otherwise the infatuation with this insipid (even by the standards of camp) series is giving me serious pause as to whether to return to these boards. Friday the 13th has always been a horrible horror franchise, throwing out any pretentions of viable suspense for flashy effects and gore at best and an utterly cynical view of its audience at worst. I truly abhor films such as this which draw on there own awfulness as a substitute to creating characters that the audience can sympathize with or situations which are logical as oppossed to being simply lazy and absurdist; to create an entire canon around........jeez. It was funny the first time when it had a BROAD audience and reflected an aspect of the true mindset of its time, but now.......

Salutations,

While I have a habit of sarcasm, I refrain from using it on the net since tone does not carry very well.

I like the series.

Are they worthy companions to classic horror movies? No
Are they well written or well acted? For the most part, No
Are they deserving of any artistic recognition? Of course, not.

They are silly fun movies- the same way (off the top of my head) Big Trouble in Little China, the James Bond series, most Arnold Swartzenegar(sp?) movies, Star Trek, and even the Star Wars series are all nonsense and junk.. but fun to watch for what they are.

Atleast the Ft13 series does not take itself seriously- it is camp and thrives on it.

giving me serious pause as to whether to return to these boards.

Good bye!

If you are going to throw a hissy fit because some people like movies you don't like, then I can't imagine your reaction when something worth getting upset comes about.

Just so I understand....

Do you enjoy these films despite themselves or because of it. If the latter is the case, and the trashier aspects are in point of fact a draw, may i ask why? I see little purpose to watching a bad movie or, even worse, a series of bad films. Its simply too easy to do. They don't even rise to parody, because that actually requires a conscience understanding of the genre's weaknesses thrust against a knowable framework of the audiences taste. I'm sorry, it is simply too easy to create these movies. As an intellectual excersise, taunting them is often a fun, social experience, but is it that difficult or in point of fact more rewarding to critique a Good film, or if levity is needed, a Good comedy. A real movie is infinitly more challenging to grasp, mock, or appreciate than.....these.

P.S.
My comment about leaving these board was half-sarcasm (my bad), though i do often tire of the narcissism and sense of personal stake that i see attached to bad sci-fi/fantasy sindicated series. I am an avid rollplayer. The drama of this genre does not interest me as much as tactical and strategic descisions offered to my characters, the latter of which require some roleplaying but also possesses and rational/gamish quality that makes it tolerable. Just ask my dm about my wizard with cha 8! Pretention often gets on my nerves.

Lexa Doig and Lisa Ryder (sp?)! Beka and Rommie in the same super-crappy film? I'm in!

Rommie? Yum. Count me in! My favorite episode was when Rommie went down to some planet or other to kick bootie all by her lonesome. I'm not real fond of that new hairstyle though.

I read through the whole of your two posts, then came upon this last line.

And I laughed and laughed and laughed and laughed...

I would say a little from column a and a little from column b.

First, you need to understand that these slasher movies are a genre of horror- splatterpunk.

Now, for the most part, I find splatterpunk distasteful and disgusting (as I do horrerotica, such as Anne Rice).

However the Ft13 series are such a low level of splatterpunk that I can tolerate it and actually enjoy it- since the violence hardly ever rises above the action movies of today.

The series has a set of amusing characters. Some of which would have a welcome place in rpg's, such as the bounty hunter in 9.

It also tends to have some clever/amusing scenes: the boxing scene I mentioned above. The hero/bounty hunter talk in jail in 9. The house being dropping in 7. The boom box scene in 8. (I have not seen many of the early ones in years- so my memory blends most of their silliness together.)

I make no pretense that these movies are of any intellectual value, but don't think that is a requirement for entertainment.
I read philosophy, religion, biographies or play rpg's when I want intellectual entertainment- I never look to any movie or tv show for intellectual stimulation. Very few have ever qualified.

I would be curious about what you consider a "real" movie needing to be grasped or worthy of being appreciated. The most recent one I can think of would be "Unbreakable", but that is an exception to movies and not the rule.

Many people think Titanic is a good movie. I think it is bad, and would watch Ft13 part 9 any day of the year before I lose another three hours to Titanic. Part 9 had better dialogue, a better story, and even better acting- the only thing Titanic had was beautiful sets.. woopie.

As I did earlier, the best thing I can compare my appreciation of Ft13 to is my appreciate of Star Trek. Star Trek has rarely had any good writing, has had a few memorable characters, and had an occasional good actor. And out of the five series, only DS9 has ever made me intellectually give a woop about what was going on.

Still, I like Star Trek. The Earth society disgusts me. The technology is silly. And the series takes itself way too seriously, but it is still fun to watch and then chat about with other people.

I don't think I can offer you a valid reason- since I think somethings can be fun without redeeming intellectual value. (hmm, maybe if I compare them to professional wrestling, roller coasters, or smores? Hmm.. maybe not.) Not everything needs to be analyzed.

My comment about leaving these board was half-sarcasm (my bad), though i do often tire of the narcissism and sense of personal stake that i see attached to bad sci-fi/fantasy sindicated series.

Well, as I said- sarcasm does not carry well. I apologize for my snotty response to the suggestion then.

And for the record- I have no personal stake in Ft13: I could care less if someone likes them or hates them. Nor do I own a hockey mask.

Pretention often gets on my nerves.

Heh, well, I don't know you well enough- but from these two posts.. this could be rather funny.

BTW- Like it or not, Jason and Freddy are the modern offerings to the ranks of Dracula and Frankenstein.

It is kind of sad no other horror figures of higher quality have been offered, but its not like I have had any better ideas.
