Jean Paul and Bullets

Phaedrus

First Post
Forgive me for this non-gaming post, but I'm sure someone on these boards can answer this question.

As a spin-off (of sorts) from the monster mis-pronunciation thread...

What is the correct pronunciation of Jean Paul Sartre?
Is it SART or SAR - TRE (with the R sound very muted and barely pronounced)?

I need a French guru to settle this once and for all, as the dread and angst of not knowing is causing me to despair!

I've always pronounced it ...

Well, here's the trick. The French "R" doesn't really map to the English "R," so neither of your options are strictly correct.

That being said, I've always pronounced it closer to the second than to the first.

The closest I ever got to an explanation that made sense was that the e on the end means that the r is not silent, but is barely pronounced.

Perhaps SAR-Truh would be a better alliteration?

Half my professors said SART and the other half said SAR-Truh, and none of us spoke French.

SAR-Truh would be the closest. Though one of the keys to sounding like a native french speaker is matering the ability to trill the "r" sound. I can't exactly explain how to do it, but I'm fairly good at it, having lived outside of Paris for five years when I was a kid.
