HELP!!!

I got KOTR and installed it on my new Compaq Presario PC, but it won't run!! :(

It's telling me that I need some OpenGL 1.4.0 thing and I only have S3 Graphics 1.2 !?!?

What is OpenGL? A video card of some sort? Or is it something downloadable that I don't have to buy new hardware for?

Help me Obi-Wan Enworlders, you're my only hoplessness!! ;)

Sounds like you need to update your video drivers. If you have an Nvidia card go to their site to get the drivers. Same goes for ATI. That should fix it.

Added my vote for KOTOR. I only played the consloe version of it but it rocks so hard. Jedi Academy is solid, but in some ways its weaker than Jedi Knight 2 to me-even though you get your powers so earlier.

But Kotor is soooo goood. Quite possibily the best SW game evah.

I agree, Kotor hands down over JA. JA was not really much of a new game, and despite the addition of some new graphics and the ability to get new and multiple lightsabers I found it really failed to grab me the way Jedi Knight 2 did. The story was kinda lame and heavy handed. They say they upgraded the lightsaber dueling but honestly I didn't notcie anything, I usually ended up just attacking quickly as possible and moving around to avoid getting hit.

Kotor had none of these issues, great story, a new and clever interface, great dialogue, you get monkeys who follow your orders and a plot that really grabbed me. Plus you get to explore a bit an interact more than you do with JA. I like games where you can walk around and poke in corners, back track to places you've been before to recheck things and go back and talk to people. JA, you pretty much just keep going forward in a predetermined path, often with limited ability to backtrack. You don't talk to anyone. And no monkeys....haven't you always wanted at least one monkey?

Comparing these two games is a bit unfair, as they're different types of games. If you want 3rd or 1st person action without too much thinking, Jedi Academy is for you. The story is a bit silly, but thats not the point. The point is to twirl through an honest-to-god lightsaber duel. Its the closest you'll ever get to being a real jedi, minus actually starring in the films of course. You'll fight with a saberstaff. You'll fight with dual sabers. You can turn on the dismemberment cheat and hack your enemies to pieces. I love this game.

Now if you're looking for a deeper story experience with less button-mashing, then KOTOR is for you. Its basically Neverwinter Knights in a star wars setting.

Can't you just save your cash and get both? :)

Yep, I'll probably have to at some point. Especially since I will need to buy a whole new graphics card to make KOTR work appearently. Turns out I don't have an Nvidia or GEforce graphics card and even with the latest drivers for what I do have, it still won't run on my system.

Thanks to everyone for all the help in deciding though. As usual, I can get any important question in life answered here at ENworld!
