No, not at all. I think it was a great thing it was brought back for some closure. I just think that there was never any plan to renew it.
If the number of viewers had been there, there would have been a plan. In fact, the finale was filmed with both a ending appropriate for a season ending and series ending (with hopes of the former, obviously.) Considering how some shows are pulled nowdays after just a single episode if the ratings are bad, I don't see a a television network saying "Oh, we'll give this show another entire season but that's it." I think they really tried to raise awareness of the show with online episodes of the entire 1st season, and airing episodes on the Sci-Fi channel and Universal HD. There were fans, just not enough.

The announced plan was never "We plan on renewing this". The announced plan was "We planned on canceling this, the fans convinced us to give it one more shot. You have 8 episodes to pick up the ratings, or else we go back to cancellation. Prove our earlier decision wrong."

Ratings did not pick up, despite decreased competition and increased marketing. So, it turns out the executives were right the first time.

That doesn't make it not a great show. But, it does make it not a broadcast network show.

Yep, it matters not how great you or I thought it was, and I have been a huge fan since day one, if it doesn't appeal to the masses it's a done deal.

Of course, I have never had a very high opinion of the masses, so....

I didn't say the plan was renewing it, I said there never was any plan to renew it. Unless the show magically became the next Heroes, it was never going to be brought back. Filming two endings was naivety, IMO.

I disagree. I heard the executives at Comic Con speak, two years in a row. These were the actual people in charge of deciding on the fate of the show. Both times they were up front with the creators and fans of the show, telling them the ballpark of numbers they needed to see.

This second set had pretty clear goals. They needed to keep certain lead-in numbers, and increase ratings by roughly X% in some key demographics. I don't recall off hand what the numbers were (you can look up articles from that panel to check, though it involved some calculation), but it was not Heroes numbers and everyone reasonable thought the goal was difficult but within reach. The creators knew this going in to season 2. They were telling the audience what they, as fans, needed to do to help get those numbers. There was a marketing plan in place to try and achieve them that had a reasonable chance of success.

But they didn't get those numbers. It's as simple as that.

I think they had reason to film both endings, and reason to believe it was possible they could be renewed, and that the executives were giving it a fair shot. It just didn't work out. Unlike certain other creators (ahem, Joss, I am looking at you), I do not think you will hear these folks ever complain, even in private conversation, that they didn't have a fair shot this second season to pull out a renewal.

I think that if you had the money, it would be downright stupid to not film an ending that allowed for continuation. 'Cause, y'know, what if it just all happened to work out?

I'm just glad they gave us a little more.

As long as they end it reasonably well tomorrow, I'm good.

Well....it was a good episode, though obviously a lot was being compressed into the one hour. But jeez....talk about a cliffhanger to leave the series on. Now I *really* want to see what happens next, and there won't be anything else forthcoming.
