Berry in Fury Over Axed Spin-Off


Actress Halle Berry is fuming after movie bosses axed her plans to make a film based on the character she played in James Bond movie Die Another Day. The Oscar-winning screen star played sexy CIA agent Jinx in the movie alongside 007 Pierce Brosnan, and was desperate to portray the character again in a franchise of spin-off action films. But now the project has been spectacularly canceled by studio chiefs, much to the disgust of the 37-year-old actress. An insider says, "Halle is absolutely furious. She thought she was going to become the female James Bond in a series of films. Now it's been canceled with little explanation." Executives at MGM made the decision over the weekend and have instructed Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson to stop developing the movie.

Is anyone actually shocked about this? I'm still waiting for the Michele Yoeh spin-off they promised.

In all seriousness, DAD wasn't that good a film to begin with, and I doubt her character was strong enough to support a franchise. Her performance, to me, was cringeworthy. I shudder to think of the way she delivered that forced, "witty", sexual banter with Bond.

Still, she was a better Bond girl than Denise Richards. Then again, Tanya Roberts was a better Bond girl than Richards. Hell, Denis Franz would make a better Bond girl than Richards.

In other news, Brosnan has said the next Bond will be his last. I'm not going to miss him. His first two were great, but the rest have really gone downhill. Surprisingly, Hugh Jackman seems to be in the lead as a replacement last I heard.

It was just a throwaway role and Halle was kidding herself about how viable the character would be on her own. They've been looking at spin-offs for Bond for some time, but the whole series is stagnant and survives on the Bond name alone.

You got that right. I'm waiting for things to get so desperate that they actually *gasp* try something new. Hoping the timing works out so that my wife and I are the hot new directors that season because we would LOVE to do a Bond film.

My idea is to do a story from John Pearson's Authorized Biography of 007, where Bond goes to a little casino run by an old friend of his that's being driven out of business by a bunch of cheating hoodlums. Bond has to figure out how they're cheating and stop them without causing a fuss.

It's NOT an MI6 mission -- he's on holiday. So when he gets into car chases, it's HIS car, so he's SUPER careful. Invert all the Bond paradigms and make him into a human being instead of a superman. That's what I love about the books -- how human Bond is. The only movies that caught very much of that were On Her Majesty's Secret Service and For Your Eyes Only. I'd like to do something like that.

A small story, not saving the world, just saving his friend. That'd be cool.

Some stories where he actually has to be a "spy" who must remain undercover would be nice as well. As an action hero, Bond is great. As a spy, well....the dummy gets his cover blown by the villain within minutes!

All of the recent Bond movies focus far too much on the action, and then throw in the obligatory Bond chick sex scenes, the obligatory Q gadget scene, and wind everything up with the obligatory exploding secret headquarters scene.

Just SOME variation would be welcome for a change!

Think 'SPY' is too board a term for Bond, he is an operative, trained to identify a treat and remove it. Spys have covers, sit behind a desk, emailing and coping files. Bond s more than that!

Interesting. I much preferred Richards. Of course, that isn't saying she was a better actress. It may just be the fact that Berry does little for me, visually, while Richards does.

I haven't seen Monster's Ball but everything else I've seen Berry in, her acting has been seriously lacking. The Jinx role was the worst of the bunch -- whoever said it was "cringeworthy" was dead on. I wouldn't even consider watching a movie with that character as the lead.

It's a Bond film that added variation, that didn't stick to the formula...and it bombed at the box office. Guess it goes to show you, huh?

I attribute that mostly to Timothy Dalton, aka Little Wooden Boy. But you're definitely right, it's the most underrated movies in the whole series!

License To Kill! License To Kill! License To Kill!

Yes, sir. Good call. I think it falls a little flat in the last half, but License To Kill is also pretty good. And I actually liked Dalton as Bond. I think he LOOKS the most like Fleming's hero, and while he lacks charisma, I think he's a good enough actor.

He had a great coldness to him -- especially in The Living Daylights, which I liked better (at least the first half).
