[July] What are you reading?

I dropped the Tanith Lee book as it didn't catch me at the start and the reviews had said it was one of her lesser works. Instead moved to and finished the second book of the Thomas Covenant series called the Illearth War. Next up: Poul Anderson's Ensign Flandry.

Recently read Ender's Game and now I'm reading The Ten (The Kingdom of Graves). It's really good and campaign inspiring. The author told me, via his Facebook page, that he runs a Pathfinder campaign in the book's setting.

Finished Hounds of Ash; started Years Best Science Fiction 29, though I don't know if I'll finish it immediately. I'm leaning towards taking a few other books with me this weekend, and saving that for later.

Just finished "The Song of Achilles" by Madeline Miller. Lived up to and even surpassed all the rave reviews it has been getting online!

It is a retelling of the Trojan War from the point of view of Patroclus, Achilles' companion and lover. Lyrical, moving and very good at bringing the early Greek world to life. A SUPER read!

From a gamer's point of view, it brings the interaction of the Gods and Mortals together in a very clear fashion; I could really see how to play a deity in and of the world.

I'm currently in the middle of China Miéville's 'Embassytown', which apart from a few very minor nitpicks is brilliant so far.

It's a very inspired reflection about language, building on an intriguing sci-fi story about a unique alien species.

Enjoyed The Dragon's Path. An interesting take on economics in a low-magic fantasy world.

Started on Company of Liars, a Canterbury Tales-influenced work about a bunch of folks/charlatans trying to escape the plague. Love the historical detail.

Instead moved to and finished the second book of the Thomas Covenant series called the Illearth War.

Quite possibly my favorite novel in the genre withwonderful supporting character development and and interesting twist on Covenant's "dream" with Hile Troy.

I'm switching gears and reading "It's the Middle Class, Stupid!"
