ANyway doesn't Legendary Journeys (the 'new' Gygax game) also have all weapons doing the same damage modified by Crits or something?

Not really. In Lejendary Adventure most weapons have an high-range damage of 20, and a d20 is rolled to determine it. But lots of weapons have different low-range damage. A short sword, for instance, does 2-20 points of damage, while a claymore does 11-20 points. So there is a difference.

As to the ODnD stuff, I love the old stuff. So much so, I almost wish I'd never gone to AD&D over it. I think I would have gotten more play out of the Basic/Expert stuff than I ever did Advanced. Instead, it wasn't until I got into college that I really started playing (as opposed to world building on my summer breaks).

You know, that's a really interesting idea. After all, any weapon can cause a fatal wound; it's just that a claymore is more likely to do so than a dagger.

Man. I may actually have to take a look at the LA system now. ;)

And any weapon can nick you too, but a claymore can't nick you under such a system. (A giant can't nick you in D&D either, unless you have enough hit points that 12 points is a nick.)

True enough. Which is why I didn't say "Oooh! That sounds like a perfect system!" ;)

I just think it's an interesting approach, and it's different enough that I may want to see what else they do in the system.

You should check out the quickstart rules on Lejendary.com. :)

And now, back to your regularly scheduled thread.

Sure it can, assuming you have 10 points of armor protection. In LA, armor detracts from damage. So no, if you're unarmored and someone takes a whack at you with a claymore, chances are if he hits it won't be just a nick. Of course, I'd challenge anyone to take a full hit with a sharpened claymore and take a nick too. OTOH, a fully armored knight (20 points protection) will scoff at a weak hit by a claymore (11 damage).

I don't mean to claim this is a better system than DnD's, only to clarify the initial remark. :)
