Dirk Pitt is a bit like an American James Bond. Less class, more bravado, similar calibar of impossible things done, good looking women, insane villians, gadgets, even the occasional underwater lair.

In the novel Sahara the heroes learn the CSa kidnapped Lincoln and had him on that ironclad. Some actor was killed at Ford's theater.

The commentary on the movie on the DVD is good. What kind of business did it do?

Not that hot. Production costs are estimated at about $130 mil; combined box office receipts for domestic and overseas are estimated at $120 mil. Box Office Mojo doesn't even have a number for marketing costs, but they're presumably in the tens of millions too. Unless the DVD sales are totally "da Bomb" I wouldn't get all excited about any more Dirk Pitt movies anytime soon.

I must say that the plot of the movie went in completely different directions than I expected it to.

I mean, pollution and supersunrays? WTF?
?? that was a big part of the book (haven't seen the movie)... the evil French guy (yeah, that's redundant :) ) who managed the big disposal unit used focused sun rays to destroy industrial waste (which is why it was in the Sahara), but was secretly storing tons of waste just tossed into the caverns below the site... the waste was leaking into the ocean and causing red tide problems. The whole focus of the book was finding out the source of the contanimation. What did the movie focus on?

Well, the movie is called Sahara. You start off looking for a Confederate treasure. You don't really expect to deal with pollution and sunrays on a treasure hunt.

I, too, loved the movie.

It went down the same road.

But y'know, it's about treasure hunters in the Sahara.
Supersunrays and pollution control were not expected.

I'm not saying I was let down or anything. I liked it.

Just a dash of "Whahuh?!"
