Justice League Villains, a little help?

Honestly, I don't recognize half of the JL villians....

'course, I've not been following comics and such for a while (just movies, tv, etc.).

Star Saphire is another one I'd not heard about before this JL cartoon.

(not that I have much to add to this thread just saying ... :) )

The Star Sapphire was the result of a split personality in Carrol Ferris, girlfriend (and boss) of Green Lantern Hal Jordan. She was given powers similar to GL's by the female counterparts of the Guardians of Oa (the tiny bosses of the GL Corps). As of note, they weren't tiny blue hags, but tall and beautiful amazon types.

The Cheetah was archeologist Barbara Minerva, who sold her soul to a plant god called Urzkartaga. She had to drink a potion made from the plant god to become the Cheetah. In recent issues, Barbara Minerva was apparently killed by the new Cheetah, a man called Sebastian Ballesteros.

The Ultra-Humanite (the white big-headed gorilla) was a mad scientist (with an uncanny resemblance to Lex Luthor in WWII) and developed a technique to surgically transplant his brain from one body to the next. He even posed as a high-profile Hollywood starlet during the 40s. His latest body was genetically engineered to create a superstrong gorilla body whose skull would be large enough to house a human brain.

Solomon Grundy has been covered. In short, he's a zombie.

The Shade draws his powers from the Shadowlands, a dimension of nightmares. He was a foe of the first Green Lantern, Alan Scott. It was theorized that repeated exposure to the Shade's shadow powers affected Alan Scott's body, and this shadow energy was then passed on into his son, Todd Rice, a.k.a. Obsidian. Obsidian is currently a villain in JSA.

Copperhead is a small-time crook that can stretch his body a little to constrict like a snake, and has a poisonous bite on top of that. He used to be a Hawkman villain, iirc.

Lex Luthor is currently the president of the United States.

HISTORY:

The Star Sapphire is the chosen queen of the Zamarons, an immortal race of females descended from the planet Maltus. By tradition, the Queen of the Zamarons was always a mortal and each successive queen would be an exact duplicate in appearance. The reason why the Zamarons would appoint a mortal outsider as their queen remains a mystery. Though the Star Sapphire is led to believe she leads the Zamarons, it is only at their whim.

A frequent enemy of the Green Lantern Corps, the true origin of Star Sapphire remains shrouded in legend. It is known that her "royal lineage" extends back at least a few hundred years to the 11th Century, when a Star Sapphire and the entity known as the Predator attempted to have a "child" between them.

Following the death of the reigning Star Sapphire, another would be chosen by the Zamarons to take her place. In the late twentieth century, the Zamarons searched the universe for a successor until they found Carol Ferris of Earth.

Carol Ferris would have made a fine queen, except for her adoration of Green Lantern. The Zamarons sought out to prove to their proposed queen that Green Lantern was weak, and therefore not deserving of her attention. Through the music of a Zamaron organ, Ferris was transformed into the Star Sapphire, named after the gem that contained much of her power. She wore the sapphire in a tiara and was clothed in the traditional costumes for hunting and exploration.

Armed with the gemstone, Star Sapphire had the power of flight and a repelling ray. Ferris was telepathically induced to fight the emerald gladiator, despite her love for him.

In their first confrontation, Sapphire defeated Green Lantern, but Ferris believed it was by sheer chance. Determined to prove Green Lantern was weak, the Zamarons gave her another opportunity to defeat the hero. Though they increased her power, giving her the power of mind over matter and the ability to create objects out of thin air, Star Sapphire was defeated by the emerald gladiator in their second confrontation.

Disappointed by Ferris' failure to defeat Green Lantern, the Zamarons used their music to cause Ferris to forget all that had happened. They returned Ferris to her aircraft and left to continue their search for the next Star Sapphire.

Whether by design or accident, the Zamarons left behind the sapphire gem. Green Lantern found the sapphire and gave it to the Coast City police.

I believe there's a new version of SS in the Kyle Rayner GL run as
well as the JSA fought the REAL SS (the one the rest of them are
being imbued with the power of). I do not know if it was the Rayner
version of the character that is british or not, or if that's only a AniDCU
thing.

SHADE

First Appearance: Flash Comics #33 (September 1942)

English by birth, the Shade finds himself most at home in Opal City, a place he has come to love dearly. Over a century ago, he and a dwarf called Culp experienced something which gave them command of a mysterious shadow-substance and made them immortal. Using these abilities for mercenary purposes, the two of them often clashed across the globe for many years, until finally Culp disappeared. The Shade made a name for himself, of a sort, as a costumed villain, fighting the masked mystery men of America for no reason other than for sport. In recent years, however, he has mellowed and reformed, tending to use his powers in protection of Opal City and could even be regarded as a hero of sorts, having formed friendships with a number of super-people, not least Starman Jack Knight. He has also had a final confrontation with Culp, who had been hiding within his own body for decades. He is now pursuing the current Spider, a member of the hated Ludlow family, against whom the Shade has a long-standing grudge.

The Shade
In 1838, London resident Dickie Swift gained shadowy powers from an arcane ritual. Immediately thereafter, he ran afoul of the wealthy and immoral Ludlow family, who hunted the now-immortal Swift for many generations to follow, right up to the present.
During the next century, Swift journeyed the world, making many famous acquaintances. In his travels, he encountered yet another arch-foe: Simon Culp, who had gained shadowy powers concurrent with his. Their feud climaxed during the London Blitz, when an exploding bomb fused their essences. Thereafter, Swift retained mastery of their combined powers until fatigue allowed Culp to usurp control for an interval.
In 1942, Swift took to crime for the exhilaration and the much-needed diversion that jousting with costumed heroes (primarily the first Flash) brought to his unending existence. Driven by sport rather than malevolence, Swift secretly did his share of good deeds when it served his purposes, such as preserving the tranquility of Opal City, his adopted home.

No longer acting the villain, the Shade retired to his beloved Opal City. He has since become a trusted advisor to Jack Knight (Starman VII).

Shade's control over darkness and shadow coupled with his immortality made him a truly formidable opponent. However, for him most of his criminal endeavours were merely a means to pass the time and therefore he was not above disappearing when he tired of sparring with his current opponent. When Culp managed to rest control over their form, the shade became cruel and malicious, delighting in acts of violence and bloodshed.
