Baba Yaga is Russian not Ukrainian but still Slavic. If the hut did not have to be so insulated against cold, it could be made of cloth or even woven grasses. The latter could blend in with the background scenery.

Gonna hafta dig into my Public Library: the area we call Ukraine is the western end of the Steppe zone stretching across central Asia. There used to be nomads living there, back to Greek / Persian days and before. Some of your inhabitants could be inspired by the Scythians, Aryans, Khazars, Turks, &c.

I think I got my rough draft of my overview. I feel I might be reaching in a few places (becausing finding the one unique thing on a few of the small towns are hard), but if there's interest, I'll post.
