I think I heard someone say that WotC was not going to re-release these products for 3E. What was the reason for that?

Or are they going to think about it after they release a book for every major area of Faerun? How many *major* areas of Faerun are there anyway?

WOTC has no plans to update those parts of the world with sourcebooks, however some updates have started to appear in Dragon.....

What was WotC's reason, though? That's what I was curious about.

There's not enough interest in those parts of the world and so those continents don't sell enough sourcebooks since most campaigns only take place on Faerun.

For the most part, they were not profitable enough for TSR.

The only way they'll consider it is if there are at least 50,000 customers asking for each products and willing to buy.

ice wind dale and amn come to mind

Amn would qualify, but Icewind Dale, even by its own description, is podunk nowhere.

Well, we've already seen the Silver Marches and Unapproachable East. I could easily see a Lands of Intrigue book (Calimshan, Chult, Lake of Steam, Shining Sea area), a Sword Coast book (Western Heartlands, Waterdeep, Tethyr, Amn, Moonshaes, etc), and a Dalelands/Sea of Fallen Stars book (the Dales, Cormyr, Sembia, SoFS, Vilhon Reach, etc).

That would cover most of the major bases. You've still got the Shaar/Lurien/Halruaa, the far north, and the N/NE of the SoFS regions, but there's not alot going on there that springs to mind as book-worthy at the moment.

Apparently there is -- The Shining South is the subject of a book on WOTC's release schedule for the latter part of this year.

Shining South HC

Does anyone know exactly what lands/countries will be detailed in 'The Shining South' hardcover?

So far, there isn't anything resembling detail in the official Product Description.
