D&D General Kender PC, Yes or No?

Would you allow me to play a Kender PC in a game YOU are running as a DM?

See, I dont have an issue with Kender. Just most of the players who'd play one.
Most of those players would be obnoxious enough whatever race/class. But let them play a Kender & they take it to a whole new lv.

It also corrupts normal players.

Think I saw one in 1996, didn't get out of therapy until 2017. Cost the taxpayers thousands.

As I've never DMed Dragonlance and thus never had a true Kender in my games, I'm talking here about the concept of a who-cares-about-the-consequences joker - of any race - who is occasionally useful in the field but who brings chaos wherever else s/he goes.

Yes, they're allowed. In fact, in one form or another characters like this have been a somewhat common sight in our games down the years. The game would be much duller without them.
 


Kenders should be allowed, but they may need a remake, not only about the personality, but the racial traits, too focused into stealth classes (rogue). When a PC race only can be good for rogue or other class then it is not a right PC race. Kenders as PC race can't be only clones of Tasslehoff Burrfoot.

Kenders are very cute and perfect for a children cartoon, but in a horror movie they seems too stupid, almost crying loud for being the first ones to be killed by the slasher or monster, or to fall in the trap because they weren't enough cautious. They aren't the type of characters psychologically ready to survive a serious crisis as a walking dead apocalypse.
 

As much as I joke about kender, I agree with @LuisCarlos17f. For me anyway, the biggest issue is that they don't really have an identity outside of a chaotic, clueless kleptomaniac. They would need something more than that.

I don't see anything in a kender that isn't already included in halfling. I mean, what would they have that a lightfoot halfling doesn't have? Everything that makes them unique seems to be character traits, which don't have all that much to do with race.

On the other hand, I never did play dragonlance modules so my knowledge outside of the books and Tass is limited. He was an interesting comic relief character in the books, but that doesn't mean he would be someone I would want in a party.

So to those that like them, what would make them special? What would they be other than (at most) a subrace of halfling?
 




I also take a dim view of chaotic stupid & am not above calling someone out when they start causing problems. There are people in this thread who weren't playing back when kender were a thing so I feel like It's important to give some history on what specifically a kender is. It's literally a race built on almost every negative trait a player can exhibit at the table & to top it off was written in such a way that the absolute morality of the system at the time would punish the victimized players if they ever snapped. It's a race one very small step down from Jill's stalker X making lewd tongue & hand signals across the table at her.
A bit harsh but... you're not wrong.

If you want to play a kender that isn't a jerk... why do you want to play a kender?
 

I'd let the non-you players vote as they would be the ones putting up with the shenanigans of the kender.

As a player I'd allow it, but if the kenderness level were 7 or higher I'd have a chat with you after a few sessions and ask you to tone it down.

I think some light hearted inter party conflict can make for good story, however some players are bad at reading the room when it comes to knowing when to say when.
