[KenzerCo] upcoming GAMA previews!

Well, it's that time of year again.

Saturday morning I leave for a long drive from Chicago to Las Vegas, where we'll be previewing and promoting three of our upcoming games at the GAMA trade show.

The first, of course, you may have heard about....

Aces & Eights: Shattered Frontiers - This is going to be great (though of course I'm biased). It's a top-tier western game with a simple and VISUAL basic system that allows you to explain the game with a “WOW” impact in under 30 seconds. Though it's very heavy on roleplaying, it's designed to plays equally well as an RPG or skirmish level miniatures game, and the final product will be very high quality - a desirable addition to any western fan’s collection (regardless of how many western RPGs you already own).

The combat system provides VERY detailed wound results with just two dice, and the use of graphics in the combat system eliminates abstraction and complexity – you can actually see the cover, position and location of your target. Plus, the new chip-based weaponless combat solves the problem of “temporary” damage. Characters actually become winded, tired or knocked senseless in the fight.

Aces & Eights also gets the players incentivized to do more than just rob banks or chase down banditos. They can start a business, open a mine or a ranch, pursue a political career, or accumulate monetary and social power to build their own western empire. There are no levels or classes - you can change professions at will, just like the Old West. Also, you only gain experience in skills used.

Wow. I said so much about A&8 that anything I say about the other two is going to sound weak by comparison. Still, they're both really great games. One is a board game, while the other is a card game. I think I'd better not say any more, though, so we can have SOME surprises at GAMA.

Hope to see a lot of you there!

Glad to see more stuff coming out from the old boys at Kenzer & Co.

It's always interesting to see the fields to which RPG companies expand to. I remember the old Lost Worlds bit and one of my friend's friend's loves the card game. (Some spoof of Vecna I think.)

Good stuff!

I thought I remember reading thay A&8 would use the Hackmaster engine, which doesn't seem to tie with no classes/levels. Did I read someone's rumour as an actual fact, or did something change over the development process?

Back from GAMA!

We ran some demos of Aces & Eights and showed off its new features, and previewed two upcoming products: the Tech Support card game and The Great Space Race board game.

Here's a link to some pictures.

Bits of the game are similar to HM, such as a (more realistic) quirks & flaws, and a similar (and improved) system for skills, talents and proficiencies. So there are some rules adapted from HackMaster, but the combat engine is quite simplified and streamlined, while being very realistic.
