I'm not saying what they did was brilliant, but it was a very sensible and "good" thing to do in the situation the way it was going down. They tried to rescue the sister unscathed. She was killed, but they were able to bring justice to the villian AND they ensured that the attacker did not escape with her and do even more horrible things to her and her sister. And they brought her back from the dead. Sure you can go back and find out what spells and ablitities they had and maybe you can find that they should have cast something else, but what they did was perfectly sensible.

Actually, this scene reminds me of another movie, John Carpenter's Vampires.

In one scene, Mallik(sp) the master vampire had ambushed the slayers while they were partying it up with some local working girls after a hard day of vampire killing. The master is unstoppable, killing slayers and girls alike with little effort.

One of the slayers pulls a gun - the master grabs a girl to use as a shield. The slayer just empties his clip - some shots into the master, some through the girl. He didn't give a s*** about the girl, he just wanted to kill the master.

I'd say the act was at least neutral, if not evil.

Those Vampire slayers were mere thugs. No heroes. And he did it in frightened selfdefense, seeing everyone around being slaughtered. The heroes had the villain ride away.

It seems like the fact that the villian had already killed one hostage before he even began to "negotiate"

that said, maybe have some spellcaster in the town, maybe a cleric from the local temple or an adept come to the party(or the party cleric has a dream on how to) with some way for them to transfer either a level or a point of con from someone to the girls to repair what was lost from the raise, combine that with the future favor plot hook should be enough, imho

How about we alter this discussion a bit, to clarify the moral question. It isn't more realistic, but I think it is clearer.

Assume you have the ability to travel back to a moment in 1939. You are standing near Hitler, have a gun, and you believe you can kill him. To kill him, you will have to shoot through someone you believe is innocent "good" person, and it may kill that innocent person. (No, you cannot go to a different time, or alter the situation in any way. You have only one choice, shoot through the innocent person to kill Hitler, or not shoot at all and return to your own time). Do you shoot, or not?

I know, the immediate complaint will be that this is not a good analogy, because the PC's had plenty of other options, and raise dead was also a factor. That is NOT the point I am trying to get at here.

The only point I'm trying to clarify is this: Is it a "good" action to only care about stopping an "evil" person (to prevent future deaths of "good" people), even at the potential death of one "good" person?

Actually, I think it's the Spring weather. It's driving me nuts. I was acting all funny in front of class this morning...smiling like a fool, cracking jokes. My students probably think I'm mad.

Thank goodness next week is Spring Break!
