Killed by Ape

If I was summoning a planar ally I would consider it. But in this case I was too busy trying to hit the hasted half-hobgoblin sorceress who had summoned it. ;)

Had to ask :D

Oh, I don't mean that all of the PCs died when they encountered Apes. Nonetheless, apes being encountered a handful of times in more than 25 years (thousands of games and many times that encounters) doesn't seem like much to me.

Let me get this straight. On a few occasions PCs have been killed by apes. Apes have been encountered a handful of times. This suggests to me that apes kill a lot of PCs when they show up.

I mean goblins have been encountered countless times but I can't remember a single time a PC have ever been killed by one. (Unless you count the clichee 10th level goblin chef all DMs seem so keen on surprising the party with.)

The point is; Apes are a murderous lot. This is simply an observation and in no way a poor loser cry of apes being torn ...I mean broken. :)

Girallons!!!

With their CR 5.

Just trow one of these buggers against a 7th level party and watch as the party is shredded.

I ,rolling a random encounter, used 2 of these against an 8th level party. after the initial round and 2 characters dead the rest ran like hell!!

But yes apes are rather a tough lot.

I haven't yet seen a player die by dire ape. There does seem to be a rough correlation between the number of barbarian deaths and the number of Dire bears that appear in my games.

I almost trashed a whole party with two dire apes recently, it was sheer luck none of them died. They were all heavily wounded though. In 2e i almost killed a fifth level character with a stag.:D

Animals and dire animals IMO are some of the deadlyist encounters out there.

Girallon, definitely. I was slaughtered by the fiendish one in RttToEE, and did the slaughtering with the same one in the same module.

I realized it's effectiveness then, when it was the first thing to seriously damage the half-dragon with it's rend.....*shudder*

Filthy apes :p

Yeah, when I was playing Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil, the first PC death was caused by the Dire Ape. (Funny, the PC was a half-dragon too).

The only other thing that killed anyone in the party before I left (right after entering the Temple of All Consumption) was a greater water elemental that the DM placed in a side quest he employed to get us back on track.
