Killer Combo

Dude, he's a sorcerer. He's got like three spells to his name, right?

Okay, that's an exaggeration. But still, his tactics are going to be limited.

Instead of coming up with situations to make this (hardly overpowered) tactic useless, why not approach it differently? Why not come up with situations where his other spells will be useful?

If he took invisibility as his other 2nd-level spell, come up with situations where scouting is important. If he took glitterdust, throw them against invisible opponents. If he took rope trick, throw them in situations where they need to rest in the middle of enemy territory.

As it is, he's probably not doing as much damage as a fighter is. Figure that enemies will save vs. his flaming sphere about 1/4 of the time, and he's doing (5.25 + 10.5) 15.75 points of damage each round with this tactic. Compare this to a fighter with an 18 strength who'll hit probably 75% of the time, who might be doing (7 greatsword + 6 str + 2 specialization + 1 magic) 16 points of damage per hit, or 12 points of damage per round. But the fighter can a) get attacks of opportunity and b) keep this up all day.

No, this isn't a killer combo; it's actually, IMO, a pretty boring direct-damage combo, and if I were you, I'd be trying to find ways to encourage the use of other interesting tactical spells.

What other spells does this sorcerer have? If you let us know, we can help you devise situations in which they're useful.

If you want to be truly cruel, give him a "blessing" somehow - some agent of a good deity gives him the power to spontaneously convert his spells for Cure spells of one level lower, a little like a cleric - every Flaming Sphere is a Cure Light Wounds, every Magic Missile is a Cure Minor...

The fighter-types will be clamouring for him to save his spells to heal them after the fight... after all, the Magic Missiles just speed up what they'd accomplish anyway, but they always need more cures... ;)

"You're using your spells in a reasonably effective but not particularly interesting fashion. So here's the ability to use them in an even more effective but even less interesting fashion. Mwahahahahahaha!"

Truly cruel indeed. :D

Endure elements (fire) lasts 24 hours and is a 1st-level spell. People already mentioned tactics against MM.

How many times can he use this tactic in one day? Make him think twice before using his spells - make him think about the next combat and being ready for that. If you let them do only one battle in a day, then they can get away with all kinds of powerful killer combos. This becomes much less of an issue if they have to face more than one battle in one day.

I suppose you don't want to look like you're deliberately trying to neutralize him. There's nothing that gets a player's back up more than if they feel they are being targeted by specific things such as fire resistance and shield effects.

My suggestion is to do one of the following:

- Give them a big lump of a creature to face who's going to go a few rounds of Sphere anyway.
- Give them multiple creatures to face, particularly those with flying (they avoid the Sphere but not the missiles).
- Give them a magic user who likes using Grease and his own set of missiles. A covert attack from behind and your MU will be relying on the others to protect him.

I suppose this highlights the real problem, that the other party members are not being challenged. Leave the Sorcerer to do what he does and focus on giving the others something to do while he's playing pyro. Easier said thaan done but really, you should not have too much of a problem with this. A dozen Stirges should give your MU something to work on while the rest of the party try to take out the Troll coming at them. Add evil MU if you really want to challenge them.

Hmm...

A creature with sufficient speed can evade the sphere easily (if there is enough room).

And the reach of the sphere is not soo large... so any archer ambush will get him.

But as Hyp said... it's not really a problem, any PC may do as much damage. Wait till the fireballs are flying.

And I like that blessing. Just cut it at converting 3rd level slots into 2nd level cures, otherwise he'll heal too easy :D

Thank you all for the suggestions.

The thing is it's generally a low combat game but right now we're doing overland travel with a random encounter chart so he just keeps whipping out this combo and I wanted to know how to handle that with random encounters. I've gotten some really great suggestions here - thanks.
