Don't use random encounter charts. That's my suggestion.

They get really, really tedious.

Wait till he gets another level, and smacks down every random encounter with multiple fireballs.

Come to think of it, there's no reason I can think of why an opponent couldn't use the flaming sphere as a source for a pyrotechnics spell.

Odds are the baddies will be moving away from the sphere (looking the other way) while the sphere's caster and his party members will be looking towards it. An enemy spellcaster in the rear can use a pyrotechnics to blind (most of) the party. Guess what way the baddies will be running then.

That's it, make it an enemy sorcerer. As long as your wizard is directing the sphere the party's liable to be blinded. (BTW the sorcerer doesn't actually have to be in sight of the party, he can stay hidden as long as the sphere is in his sight).

I believe in giving the players as much input into the structure of the game as possible. So when we were faced with 45 days of overland travel I asked them random encounter chart, preplanned mini-adventures or get there uneventufully. It was a unanimous vote for a random encounter chart so that's what they got. I would have prefered the mini-adventures myself but it's not my game it's our game.

Using this one sunday.

I've been looking into the possible counters for flaming sphere and I've come up with a few question marks myself.

I'm starting a new thread on this, since it concerns just the one spell, not the combo.

It might be useful to you too though.
