I know there are going to be a fair amount of "oh no, I don't play D&D to kill monsters and take treasure, I role play blah blah blah overcome difficulties blah blah blah creative solution blah blah blah." C'mon, you're not fooling anyone.
Taking of Stuff. It's the taking of stuff that determines whether you're doing really worthwhile stuff and on the plotline and such or just out in the woods whacking random Owlbear encounters. Owlbears have neither phat loot nor an evil world-destroying cult described in copious detail in their journal.
So while the killing of them is rewarding in its own XPish way, the taking of stuff is where things have the potential to let the PCs get proactively interested in the story.
