Know opponent vs Know vulnerabilities

Know opponent vs Know vulnerabilities

I was doing some research for my character a 7th level cleric of the fr red knight and wanted to take a spell that was

originally from 2nd edition: anaylze opponent. When matched with another character who can do energy substitution energy blast, should make it very devistating to our enemies.

After much looking, I managed to find two spells that are of a similar nature: Know opponent and know vulnerabilities. They

are on the same page of the spell compendium (page 129), but there is something that is bugging me about both spells.

As is,
there is no reason to take the spell know opponent.

both spells for a cleric are the same level, range, duration saving throw and spell resistance, but what they differ is the final affect.

Know Opponent allows the a number of strengths and weaknessses equal to one plus one per two caster levels to a maximum of 4

Know vulnerabilities gives any special qualities, vulernabilties and resistance that the target has. It even gives a detail that gives hard numbers ex. (damage resistance 15/cold iron)

In Dragon 317. They list the same spell know opponent as affecting 1 person per level, instead of merely one person. While this is a little too powerful, maybe an adjustment like this might be required to make it balenced

discuss.

Just use the vampire example given in the book. Know Vulnerabilities would tell you about Alternate Form, Damage Reduction, Fast Healing, and the ways to repel a vampire.
But it wouldn't tell you about Blood Drain, Dominate, Energy Drain, etc.
