Knowledge check

Hi y'all :)

Can you take 10 on a knowledge skill check?

I thought you couldn't but I can't seem to find a "proof" of this anywhere.

Thanks in advance

An interesting effect of this is that an untrained knowledge check is an intelligence check...which you cannot take 10 on I believe. That would mean you would have to have some training before taking 10, which makes sense I would say.

Ability Checks and Caster Level Checks: The normal take 10 and take 20 rules apply for ability checks. Neither rule applies to caster level checks.

Interestingly, the maximum DC for which you can make an untrained knowledge check is 10. If you Take 10, you can never fail unless you have an Int penalty!

Hmmmm..... But would you allow a Take 20 untrained knowledge check if the character had an entire well-stocked Library at hand? I think I would... of course it would take a lot of time.

Perhaps you can by the RAW, but it doesn't make sense by the nature of the Knowledge skill.

It makes perfect sense. If you have +10 to your Nature skill, as an intelligent and trained expert you should be able to identify just about any beastie out there and know quite a bit about the more common ones. That's what taking 10 gets you.

If you want to be risky, you can roll it and see what you get -- you might be an expert or you might know nothing.

Why not take 10 on a check which by nature of your training and intellect you know you can pass? Its like the difference between hoping for the best on an exam and just doing your average thing.
