Knowledge (local) only specific region ?

Hi,
does knowledge (local) give you knowledge only about a specific region or is it used in general for all regions ?
Means is it Knowledge (Dalelands) or Knowledge (The North) or just knowledge (local) [read knowledge(everywhere)] ?

The SRD says nothing about specific regions but I think in 3.0 there was always a specific region to which your knowledge skill applied.

Thanks for your help.

My understanding is that the (local) label is a bit of a misnomer--it's really for legends, non-noble personages, humanoids, etc.

Also, all of the 3.5 knowledge skills are a bit abstract. Knowledge: History would cover modern American history, modern European history, modern African history, medieval history, Chinese history, Ancient history, etc. Similarly, Knowledge: Planes covers all of the planes--the seven heavens, the beastlands, the ethereal, the astral, the elemental planes, the para-elemental planes, the positive/negative energy planes, limbo, hell, the abyss, etc. And Knowledge: Nobility and Royalty isn't just for Nyrondian nobility or Keoish nobility; it covers important people from the Seak Kingdoms and Sunndi to the Theocrat and the Prelates of the Pale. Considering all that, it doesn't seem unreasonable that Knowledge (local) is not location specific. (Although a DM might impose penalties until a character has been in a particular location for a while).

In the Forgotten Realms, it is specifically mentioned that you need to pick a local for Knowledge (Local). You would instead list it as Knowledge (region) such as Knowledge (Sembia) or Knowledge (Thay).

Specific. It's a craptastic skill. ;)

Actually for some campaigns (not mine it should be noted) it could be very useful for a specific region. There are plenty of campaigns based in one city or one region.

Of course, it doesn't actually say it's specific anyway, at least in 3.5

Why do you say it is?

As bret mentioned in the FRCS it is handled that way. So how is it handled in the Core Rules ?
Well, it won't kill me if it is one way or the other but it's just interesting when I (my character) can use this skill.
Knowledge (Dalelands) won't help me much in the North but Knowledge (local) would.
Hmm, it comes down to a DM's call ....

Thank you for your input.

It's specific, but that's why I allow my players to use it in place of Diplomacy, Bluff, and Intimidate when they're in that area. That way the players get a benefit out of having been "from" somewhere and it lets them use it as a roleplaying hook.

Generic Intimidate: Do what I say or I'll pound you into gravel!

Knowledge (Metro City) Intimidate: I was born on these streets pal, you think you stand a chance against me? Talk to Eddie on the corner of 29th and H Street. He'll tell you I'm not to be messed with. Or better yet, just do what I say right now.
